weaning a calf, help!

I have been weaning some calfs, for a few days, one is not doing so good. He seems weak and here it is Sunday. Can I give store bought milk tonight.

Sounds like you ran out of milk replacer and decided it would be a good time to wean. Although I sympathize with the logistics of this it sounds like a calf is about to pay with his life. Put him back on milk and wean him more slowly, the tough love thing ain't for a small calf. Yes, give him store bought milk tonight and tomorrow you can get some more milk.

Wean by the almanac - always. If the time is not right, don't wean. Other people are going to tell you different but most of them have probably had calves nurse for way too long already.

If you have bottle calves or nurse calves and you are going to wean them at 3 months or so, get everything in your favor that you can.

Giving him store bought milk is not going to help you wean him.

Never heard of weaning by the almanac. Course I never did anything else by it either but my dad wouldn't do much of anything without checking it first. We always weaned when they were 6-7 weeks old and eating 2-2.5 lbs. of calf starter everyday.
 
Thanks for the info. They are 6 wks. old, the others I weaned were 6 wks. also. He is the only one that acted like he was weak. Anyway I gave a Qt. of milk and then he seemed to be fine and happy. Went over to the feed and started eating grain. And today no milk and he seems fine and is eating, hay grain and grass. Thanks again
