Anybody have a suggestion for waterproofing leather boots.

I have been useing mink oil conditioner and it seems to be totally useless, as evedent by my wet socks.

The mink oil is fine. After you put it on, use a hair dryer to heat your boots and help the leather absorb it.

Clean them about once per week and let them dry overnight, or longer, then apply the oil and heat.

Have a minimum of 2 pairs so that some can be drying while wearing the others.

Wet boots won't absorb the oil.

I used to use the silicone spray, mink oil, neetsfoot oil, etc. Now I don;t worry about the leater, I only wear boots with a goretex liner. The boots get heav, but my feet stay dry

In truth a leather boot will never stay waterproof. It can only be made water resistant. The military has worked for years to get leather bootswater proof and it cannot be done. And if it is done - it is only for a very short period of time.

I have worn - due to various exchange tours - American Army, U.S. Marines, Brit Army and of course my own Canuck military leather footware. All of it has proved to NOT be waterproof - all of it is in fact only water resistant. There is a big difference in water proof and water resistant.

If you are going to walk around in wet conditions you have only a few chouces - rubber boots, gortex socks or stay out of the wet.

Any company claiming their leather boots are water proof are not quite telling the truth. Sooner or later they all get wet inside.

Thanks for all the advice.
I solved the problem. Went down to the saddle shop and bought some overboots. I put on my rain coat and hat, went to the pasture and scared the ---- out of the cows. They have never seen anything like I must have looked.

Is that not the funniest thing in the world. Then when you say something to them, it gets worse. I can just imagine their minds wondering what in the world happen to me I'm sure they're thinking I really had a bad night!! :shock: :lol:
