Water Squirrels

For those who aren't familiar with them water squirrels are exactly like the fox squirrels CB shoots with the smoke stick only completely different. I've been having a festive time with an overpopulation of them and breached their dams and pulled these two out the swamp today. I figure once I get another hundred of these It'll be down hill from there.

They are a PAIN IN THE I broke up a dam some made early last year which caused the water to channel towards a culvert pipe on my customers place and washed it out I had to take my backhoe and reach out and bust it up and watched it float down the river.

We have one place here in a large river that they are living in the riverbanks intead of having a dam. They have cut and carried more than 1/2 acre of corn stalks down into the river and stockpiled it somewhere. Thats fine except it still has the corn on the stalks. Other than trapping do you have any ideas. Hard to catch them at night.

Kenny, they do that around here also. No idea besides trapping. Maybe stake a good dog out there at night or sit out there at night and catch them in the act. I have heard of in the spring when the river is high it pushes them up onto the banks and they sun themselves. Then you take a boat dow nthe river really slow and quietly and pop them with a 22.

Kenny are you saying you hunt them at night and can't catch them ? That is when they are most active ive found but you gotta sit there a while.

Just hard to see at night and im way to lazy to stay out there all night when its cold. :roll:

LOL thats what a propane heater and a lil pop up tent blind is good for yea its boring though

They are dead easy to trap and those traps keep working 24/7 even on those cold dark nights. It is too bad their hides aren't worth what they were in mountain man days.

I have only seen two here. My neighbor planted a few cypress trees around a pond. While i was fishing i noticed that his wife, who does the mowing, must have mowed them all over last time she mowed. Well, he got mad, and she denied it. Then she come up with a crazy story about seeing beavers in the pond. It took us a few hours watching and we killed 2. Havent seen any since. Been over 5 years now. Nobody ive talked to has ever seen beavers around here.
