Drove 100 miles out of my way after work tonight to look at some registered angus heifers heavy bred AI to the sim bull Uno Mas. The guy had them priced at $2900 per but over the phone he agreed that he'd let them go for $2600. I liked their epds and their pedigree, and I've heard that the bull gives nice calves. When I got to the farm, I really liked 4 of them but I thought that one was really thin-boned and did not match at all with the others. He wouldn't split her off or lower the price on her. I told him that I wouldn't pay that much for a cow that I didn't like and walked away.
I feel like a made the right call but I am pretty bummed about the deal..
 
I think you made the right call. Stinks to burn that much time and fuel, but it's best to trust your gut and not compromise on a deal you don't like. Some more heifers will come along.
 
The guy called last night and said he'd take my last offer. I laughed and said that I bet you would, but with prices tanking like they have I'm going to pass..

I think you got lucky that one heifer wasn't pleasing to your eye. You make your money when you buy, and the way things are looking it could of hurt.

I agree with the others that you made the right call.

Over the past few months I have talked to folks in the beef industry in several states and they all have told me that there are LOTS of bred heifers being developed in each of their areas. With good bred heifers bringing $3000 or more in many parts of the country in the past year, apparently many people decided to get in the business. Between the fact that there will be many bred heifers coming to market in the coming months, and also the fact that feeder calf values have dropped $300 or more per head, my guess is that you will be able to buy good reputation bred heifers a few months from now for closer to $2200.
