A lot of cows at the fair I went to had warts I did not go near them because I did not want to transfer them onto my cow but then recently a friend said that she introduces warts into her herd at this time of year so they are over it by show season. Is warts something cows can get over/ is there like vaccines for it?

There are vaccines but not very effective. Warts are something that just run their course. If they get them you can treat them to clear them up or ignore them and they will eventually go away.

I bought a nice angus heifer calf for cheap cause she had warts on her nose and a few on her leg. She is with other calves and haven't seen anyone else have them. I am not keeping any of those calves but wonder if those warts are not gone how much I will get docked for them. I bought her so cheap no matter the docking I will make $ off of her. She is growing pretty darn fast for a heifer and other than looking ugly on her nose I don't see it doing anything else. I could be wrong.

It is kind of like childhood chicken pox. They seem to get them at a certain age then build some immunity. But it is inconvenient If they get them at show time. Our fairs do not allow them in, because it is a virus that is transferred.
I agree with Dun, the vaccine is said to not be very effective. :(
Sky maybe just keep her until they are gone.

Brangus Yea thats what I was thinking but when I take that load shes going too. I have had her for 2 months they are still there. I am hoping by Feb or March when I carry a load they will have cleared up. Do you or anyone know exactly how long they usually stay? How contagious are they?

Catch her and twist a couple off with pliars. Make sure you burn them or flush them down the toilet. Seems like they are really contagious to some and not at all to others.

I wonder if you had a bovine with some warts and you put that human wart stuff on them if they would go away.

Why bother. They are easier to get rid of by just crushing them or twisting off a couple of them.

good point. I just wondered. If they arent gone a month before selling I will do that.

I've never done it myself. But I've heard of people grinding them up and feeding them to the animal that had them. And that will make them immune to warts?? :yuck: B&G

OWT. SImilar to burying it under the nighbors cousins sisters front porch by the dark of the moon in an old prince albert can. It's the removal and making them bleed that causes the immune system to kick in.

What dun said.
Mash 'em with pliers. Make 'em bleed.
They'll go away. Or, they won't.
Lots of different strains of the bovine papilloma (wart) virus. Not sure how many are in the commercial vaccines, but if 'your' strain is not in there, it's ineffective.

Have seen an occasional animal with warts inside the rumen. Always wondered if someone had "fed 'em back to 'em".

My pretty young heifer has a ward under her eye... can't really do too much about it... I've found they usually get them sometime between 6 months and a year old, and they'll have them for about a year.. never had any that cause trouble.

OBTC, when I bath my show cattle I always use an anti microbial soap on them. (Made for horses/cattle.) I also spray an anti fungal anywhere there is hair loss. (Underline ect.) This has helped ward off anything that is on their skin that they have come in contact with.
Sky, I have used "human products" such as Freeze Off on my cattle. It did not do too much good, and took a lot of product.

On a single wart, you can tie a piece of dental floss around it very tight and it will fall off. But will usually come back until their immune system kicks in to keep the virus at bay.

How long does it take until they start to go away. Cause my only problem is if i bring her to my leaders cow farm over the winter i will not take her out again until March so i would not be able to wash her for 3 months and our first fair is in July. Will that be enough time for her to get rid of them? I won't be able to show her if she still has them.
