I bought a cow/calf pair today and went to tag the cow and she had warts in both ears ( they would peel off with pressure ) Is this just cosmetic or a health concern ? Thanks in advance all replies appreciated

my experience with horses is they go away with time and not much of an issue other than appearance , Is there something I'm unaware of with warts on cattle ? No receipt Tux

I'm just messing with ya Bobby. From what I've read on here warts aren't a big concern in cattle either.

Warts are caused by a virus. The cow will develop an immunity at some point.
When we see warts here it is usually on calves after weaning when they are developing their own immunity system.
Old timers would say to peel off the warts and put them in her feed and they would go away. There may be something to that in allowing the cows immune system to get a quicker handle on things. The cow had probably never been exposed to warts and her body is just now dealing with them.
There is a shot for warts. Not sure if it is for treatment or prevention. We simply let the calf go through the phase.

Yep, most of my calves get them around weaning too, by the time they're long yearlings it rare to see them anymore. I don't bother treating them and have never had any trouble.

We bust one and the rest of the warts go away. First time I heard that I doubted it, but it's true. They eventually go away if don't mess with them.

If you will cut them off and make them bleed -- they will build an immunity to them -- the anti-bodies will go to work
if you leave them alone --they will spread to your whole cow herd in time

The wart vac. is just ground up warts anyways, so cut one off and feed it to her. Since you have a chance to get the strain of warts that will now infect your farm, cut off as many as you can, and feed them to any calves you got. Should prevent any warts.

They are like kids getting chicken pox. You just let them get it over with! As everyone has stated, they build up an immunity against them later in life after having them. The vaccine is not worth using. Just let it run it's course, if you go messing around cutting them off you risk getting a secondary infection.
I have removed them only in show cattle.
The only concern would be if they are not truly warts, but we're instead a skin cancer.
