I obtained a bred heifer in the fall. She has a subcutaneous lump on her back located on her right side but about mid way back or just a little closer to the posterior. It is not on top of the back but just about where the back starts to break over. I am almost sure it is a warble fly grub. I just used the pour on (eprinomectin) so it will die before it emergies. I am concerned that it may become septic. Should I lance the boil and release the remains of the dead grub and any pus that might have formed.

Take a glass soda bottle, I prefer Coke bottles. You shuld be able to see the breathing hole in the hide. Place the open end of the bottle over the lump and smack the bottom of the bottle smartly a couple of times. Be ready to be disgusted. The warble will pop out into the bottle.
Next fall, a couple of weeks after gadfly/heelfly/warble fly season usea pour on insecticide that is also a grubicide and you won;t have the problem.
