Any thoughts on how to compete with that other than offering grass feed lean beef like the imported stuff.
Odds of that happening are not on our side. When buying meat from small producers getting quality beef is rolling the dice. You have a 3% chance of selling better beef.Jogeephus":3vukkmgb said:Raise better quality beef than they sell. Of course I was in Sam's the other day and looked at their beef and it looked pretty good to me.
Walmart's USDA CHOICE No. 1 beef is not treated with anything to preserve it. The co2 treated meat comes in the air tight containers. Walmarts USDA Choice No. 1 beef does not come in air tight containers.highgrit":3hfc6ltv said:The beef looks great, the problem with it is the taste. Their beef it treated with something to preserve it and to make it safe to eat.
Walmart and Publix beef is the worst tasting beef, but it does look good. :yuck: I was wondering if their beef might be imported??

That sounds great, but heck they can buy USDA No. 1 Choice ribeye for less than my burger. Meat grinders are cheap at Bass Pro Shops. Fresh ground burger out of ribeye, that is tough to beat.salebarn junkie":2gjl3zfn said:I think the angle you need to go after is the burger. It wont have water added, no colaring added, it wasn't last weeks roast, it comes from one animale not one hundred differnt cows that were at deaths door. Your beef will be aged there's won't. I think a feedlot does a better job raising beef than the average person feeding out a few steers. Its after it leaves the feedlot that the problems start.
I find it very hard to believe that just ANYBODY can raise better tasting beef than USDA Choice No. 1 beef like Wal-Mart sells. I do understand that some people like lean grass fed Standard Grade beef, however the premium still gets paid for Prime and Choice No. 1.highgrit":1mcxckot said:Aged beef is hard to beat. 21 days is my preference and grain fed. But anybody can raise better tasting beef than Walmart.
Congratulations your steer was able to do what 97% of the other people's cattle posting here could not do.Bigfoot":12enm1n7 said:I put a steer in the freezer that actually graded prime once. It wasn't really noticeably better than others I have put up. It was a show steer.

What do they cut your steaks from?highgrit":119k4nw0 said:Alohacattle it's the aging process that makes the difference. I wish we still raised a butcher steer but the nickles just don't add up. We eat alot of seafood and wild game. But when we want steaks I go to a meat market not a Walmart and have them cut, yes it cost more per lb. but the taste is well worth the extra dollars. Walmart does something to their beef and it affects the taste in a bad way.
