I agree and make it a point to get school boards # and Superintendents and keep handy. The teachers sign up to teach but are often buttheads cause they are underpaid and some just are buttheads and want to have control over people. I am too hot headed to handle situations like yourS and often will make phone calls to the school board and superintendent or let my wife handle stuff like that she has developed an art of being " NICE NASTY " .

sky my dad was on the school board.an the teachers an superintendents knew that i didnt cause any probs nor would i go to them to tend to it.an they knew who i had probs with.an when id call they would ask how madd he was an id go pretty madd an they would go oh crapp an laugh.because they knew what was coming.

Sorry, but I guess I have a slightly different take on the situation.

It sounds like his teacher wants him to read well, not just pass the tests. I think that should be applauded.
Your son was in the wrong. Yes, 5 months detention is harsh, however, your son got himself into it, and it's his responsibility to get himself out of it. It seems worth the effort on your son's part to approach the teacher with a long and heartfelt apology for mouthing off and acknowledging that he realizes the teacher was actually trying to help him. Maybe the teacher is a jerk, OR maybe he's actually one of the good ones that won't just pander to the kids and parents, and really wants kids to LEARN. Calling his principal and superintendent, at this point, seems extremely premature and not the best lesson to teach your son.

Getting thru H.S. just by passing tests but not having a functioning reading level will only harm your son greatly in the future. In this digital age, superior reading and comprehension skills are more important than ever before.

I like going to the people someone answers to and can make things happen. I don't even like talking to cust srvc people when I have a problem I go to the management.

CottageFarm makes sense to me. Probably best to let things settle out before parent involvement. Let the fire die down some before pouring gas on it.

personal responsibility now that a concept ! I say that from experience I have 3 kids and all 3 tried and did push the limits. I let them handle their problems if they were the cause. I also had one that struggled and had a modified education plan. He learned real quick that plan did not give his mouth any rights.

anyway my wife must have been a hellun is school to be paid back like we were from our kids.

I base my call to school board and or superintendent because a teacher should not threaten a student in the manner as in for months even if they did misbehave that to me is done out of anger. To me the teacher needs to know their roll and play there part a decision and comment such as that should come from a administrator up top not the teacher. While I agree as the kid said he was wrong you still have an obligation as a teacher to remain commited to education and take the high road and realize that you are dealing with a child. If it were a constant problem and disruption then the teacher should go to administration to see about permanent removal of the student. I have always been one to say if you can't handle the job without losing your cool you do not need to be in that profession lets face it kids do crazy stuff and need to be corrected if a teacher goes to school and thinks it will be easy like taking candy from a baby they will be very un-happy. IMO

If he has to be read to, he probably should be in a special
Ed class's if he's not. Or home schooled. Either way it doesn't give him a right to mouth off. Period.
I sure hope you aren't making excuses for his bad attitude

Cottage Farm this teacher has been on my son to join the football team since he became the coach. My son has no interest in playing football. Teacher has brought it up to my husband every single parent teacher conference about getting him to play football.
Teacher doesn't care about his reading he just cares about trying to force my son to join a team he wants nothing to do with. He put up with it for 2 years before I had enough and told both the super and school board it stops or else! they do not want OPI coming into the school and see why a student is being harassed to play a sport he is not interested in.

Also threatened to have an insuboardnation charge laid against my son.
Has my son talked back to me? Yes. What has happened? Even though this young man stands a head taller then me I can still put him on the run! He very rarely does it.

Finally heard from the super, he was gone yesterday. Told me he had been sent a text by this teacher about the lunch time detention, but nothing else. Told me my son needs to control his mouth. They do not like it when I call.
said he was going to talk to both my son and the teacher and then have t5he teacher call me. School is out and still no call.

hook he is in a special class to help him with his reading. I have been lied to by a former super and a couple of his former teachers about my son so I have learned to listen to him and then ask others who were there. So I asked his classmates. Yes my son mouthed off but the teacher did threaten him with this harsh punishment.
right now he is really stressed over his english class he is failing and he goes to his former teacher who taught him english before and they are helping him during his study hall. Why is this teacher willing to help him while this other teacher is not?

Seems to me that you have made up your mid and will run interference for the kid

Personally I would sit back and tell him of he had kept his big mouth shut he would not be in it - now sort it out like a man. Maybe get a bit of knowledge in that thick skull and learn something at the same time.

When you step to the plate like this you teach him to be a Mama's boy in my mind.

Not what you want to hear perhaps - but that is my take.

Tell him he is on his own to sort it out.

Seems that you have a lot of issues like this over the past few years - ever take a look in the mirror and wonder why?

Might be more to this tale than you are letting on perhaps?

You air a lot of family laundry on this form and the other you hang out at - sometimes I think you are a great person but you need to learn when to keep what is family at home - otherwise you open doors to things you do not need.

And you need to learn to let teenagers handle their own problems - no matter the teacher - you like him or not - the kid has some choices - shut up and do it - or open the yap and get the boot.

Sort of like real life on a job site - your high level complaints might be doing him no favours. After all - the next time he opens his yap he might include this phrase - "You screw with me my Mommy will call the commissioner on you!"

Stay and take it like a man or move - that option might no be palatable - but it IS an option - even if he has to board through the week - my wife and kids did it many years ago - so can be done if required

Cheers

Bez

This was an odd post. There were too many unknows for me to comment. You have a mothers recap, a teenager, a teacher... None are really credable sources in my eyes.

IMO the whole group needed to rethink how they handled the situation.

The young man needs to under stand ultimatly he needs to do what the teacher asks. Going at your teacher, especially a coach, in front of every one does not end well. Later on it will not work well with a boss either. Wait until he is done and ask him nicely if there are other options one on one. The teacher might have discussed it one one one, he might have sent him to an aid for help, or he might have said this is a good quiet time for you to practice on your own. Who knows.

The teacher needed to be the adult. He did kind of like the boy did. Butting heads like that doesnt help any one. Lead by example.

As a parent you cant just jump on your kids side. Its also your job to lead by example. There are some simularities between how the boy handled it and how his mom wanted to handle it. If as a parent you approach these teachers with a certain attitude... Your kids will do the same... For the good or bad.

Hind site is 20/20 I know. I consider myself qualified on this subject because I have mouthed off on multiple occasions and been in the same seat as the young man. :) More recently i've learned to be more diplomatic and... In all honesty... Life is a lot easier.

Good Bye!
She will never get it. She is the eternal "victim" . Always pointing the finger, it's never her fault, no personal responsibility. Why would her son be any different? Pull up her posts from the beginning. It's all she talks about is how someone did something wrong to her. But, since she posted "Good Bye!" I'm guessing g she will never be back to read my wasted words. Alas, I take that back, she will certainly not pass up yet another VICTIM opportunity. 8)

I have learned to let my kids fight their own battles. If they have a problem that needs a grown up/ parent involved * boy are they in trouble cause all they have is me* but i have told them that in order for me to fight for them i have to know the whole truth about what was said and or done by them and the other party. Then I take my info to the teacher, counselor or principal and try and work things out that way. The only fight i will not do battle on is the bullying one. MY kids have a 3 strike rule in place because the admins down here pretty much suck at protecting kids from bullies. They have to try 3 solid times to get away or get a grown up involved or something to avoid it.. If after the 3rd attempt and they have no way out... beat the snot out of the kid and let them call me down to get them. And when I get there to get my child who will be suspended for defending themselves I will take the out to eat and go home and play video games or what ever they want to do while they are suspended.. my sons resource officer told him to "man up" against bullies in middle school. several boys were pushing him into lockers and walls and calling him names and just being very evil to him. I told him then to hit them back if they use physical force on him but he didn't want to risk screwing up his college plans with that on his record. Poor kid in a way..but I know a man has to know when to stand up for himself and when not to and that its HIS choice. So I empowered my kids and haven't gotten the call yet :) Hard for a mom to help her son be a good man on some things.. and I don't have a good male role model for him in my life... so i do the best I can ...
