Never have considered getting into niche markets, but I had a feed lot guy tell me that he knew of 3 different outfit that would pay over 25 percent above market for 1/2 wagyu calves. I contacted one of the outfits that he cited and they confirmed this and said that they'd even come pick up the calves on their dime if you had a minimum group of 30 that were at least 6 months old.
Any thoughts?

I've thought about it. Not sure where to get a bull, and I wouldn't want to keep replacements. I also wonder if the reduced weaning weights would eat up the extra price?

Before I put many eggs in that basket, i.e. buying a bull, I would try AI first to see if it would pay in reality

Have some friends playing with it now. The half bloods grow out pretty well it's once you get higher percentage than 50 when you run into noticeably slower growth

Lots of guys do it here. The calves are under contract and the buyer brings you the bulls. Most guys do it on their heifers and then wean the calves and ship early. Check with agribeef.

We have a customer that purchased a group of heifers to use her Wagyu bull on. She had the grand champion Wagyu bull at Houston Livestock show this year, he is a red Wagyu and actually one of the best looking Wagyu bulls I have seen. I would like to try some of her bulls semen on my purebred commercial cows just for my own freezer, and to see how the calves compare to my angus.

The more that I researched the breed, the more I came to the same conclusion. The main thing that I liked about the deal though was that the buyer said that I could feed them up as long as I want. The calves would be smaller at weaning but from what I've read they perform really well on feed.
