Vietnam to Earmark Cattle to Prevent Disease Spreading

Xinhua News Agency, July 02, 2006

HANOI, Jul 3, 2006 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- All cattle when transported in, exported from or imported to Vietnam must be earmarked as a way to prevent animal diseases, including foot-and-mouth one, local newspaper Youth reported Monday.

Under a recent decision of the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, all kinds of cattle, including buffalos, cows, bulls, goats, sheep, deer, horse, donkeys and pigs, when being transported out of a Vietnamese district, exported from or imported to the country, must wear a plastic card at their ears which indicates the code of district and provincial veterinarian bureaus, the year of card issuance, and the number sign of the cattle.

Also under the decision, the cattle will not be earmarked until they meet requirements regarding quarantine and animal health hygiene.

As of July 1, foot-and-mouth disease was detected in 253 communes of 25 cities and provinces of Vietnam, affecting 8,317 buffalos and bulls, and nearly 2,151 pigs, according to the ministry's Department of Animal Health.

Under a national agriculture development plan approved by the government in 2005, Vietnam will, by 2010, have 35-40 million pigs, 6.5-6.7 million bulls and cows, 2.8-3 million buffalos, and 380- 390 million poultry.
