vetch?

The vetch that I'm famliar with is a legume, kind of a wild pea sort of plant, cows love it, seem to do well on it. Never have had it as a major component of their forage. I classify ir in the smae general category as clover.

Planted here sometimes for Wildlife Plots, also good for areas that wash easily, really holds it's ground. Some of it can be very pricey, if you're gonna sow it.

You can buy some stuff called crown vetch here to plant in flower gardens. Have seen some being sold at Bomgaars (farm supply store). Don't do it though. Takes over the whole entire flower bed. State seeds it into the road sides along the highways here. Very hardy and spreads. Pretty when it's flowering too. Don't know anything about it for cattle use though.

There used to be quite a bit of vetch here in central Texas.. we still occasionally see it around. The cows do love it.. and I believe it's in the clover family also. It's perennial.. but if I remember correctly, if it's grazed too short it will be killed off.

Is this what you're referring to?

We have quite a bit in our pastures too. It seems to be able to compete against bermuda thatch better than many forbes. I'm glad to have one more thing growing that cattle and deer both can benefit from.
Yes, that is what I am referring to.

Don't know all of the different varieties of vetch, but the type we have out here the cattle won't touch until it dries out some, then they really go after it. Got lots of it in my pastures, but with all of the doggone rain, it will be awhile until the cows eat any of this vetch.
