Hello,

I am new to this forum and appreciate your help. We have started a new Reg. Angus hurd and are having some problems dealing with health issues. The nearest large animal vet is 70 miles away so we are having to do a lot of it on our own. I can find several general vaccination schedules but our problem is that each animal that we have purchased is in different stages of having and not having the proper vaccinations. Bellow is the specifies
1. 4 year old cow, don't know what she has had in the past, probably not much. She has been TB vaccinated, 2 mo. preg.
2. 7 year old cow, has had all proper vaccinations to date. She is now 5 mo. preg.
3. 12 mo old heifer, purchased in 3/08 with current vaccinations. We have had her sense and will breed her in Feb/09
4, 8 mo. old heifer, has not had her calfhood vaccinations.
5. 2 year old bull. Do not know if he has had any vaccinations

Can someone tell me what I need to do to get these cattle caught up to date? Your help will be very much appreciated.

I WOULD SAY THAT YOU NEED TO START ON YOUR OWN VACCINATION AND DEWORMING SCHEDULE. YOU WILL HAVE TO ADJUST THE TYPE OF VACCINE ACCORDINGLY TO THE COWS THAT ARE BRED. PUT ALL YOUR COWS ON ONE SCHEDULE AND KEEP YOUR SCHEDULE
 
Thank you Luckefarm !!!! Does it make any difference when and if they have already had any vaccinations. I hear you saying just go head and vaccinate according to the regular scheduling. What about the preg cows? the schedule I have calls for vaccination prior to calving. The cows are now 2 & 5 months preg. At what point should I vaccinate them? The heifer calf that we will breed in about February, I will vaccinate with Vista 5 L5 (Intervet) 30 days prior to breeding. The 8 month old calf needs all calfhood vaccinations now. What about TB vaccination. Do I have to have a Vet do that? Finally I do not have any schedule for vaccinating the 2 year old bull. I will try the internet for info. Any suggestions?

Dawn call a vet..You are going to have to have a relationship with them at some point because you will need to get meds..Sh@t happens.....70 miles is peanuts, my LAV that is my main go to is 130 miles away and they always come when needed...

They will tell you what is best for whom ,exactly what you need for your area and at what ages ,if cows are bred etc...
 
OK. Try to get the breeding around the same time. It will save you a few headaches trying to vaccinate each animal seperately.
We vaccinate our cows when they are open with Vista LV5 SQ and a pasturella vaccine.
Calves are given an 8-Way vaccine, Vista Once SQ, and Naslagen.When branded about 3 months of age, then given the 8-Way again after weaning 6 months of age.
Bred heifers are given a Scour Bos 9 about 5 months before giving birth then booster about 1 month before they calve. Treat the cows the same if they have not had it before.

HD is right. The vet can get you going the right way for a vaccine program that works for you.
This is just our program.
