I am new to this beef cattle deal, I have been around it a little all of my life. But, we never, ever had a vaccination program. Now that my herd is growing to 30 brood cows by years end. I need a vaccination program. The vets in this area are swamped to say the least. I can't even get one out here for dehorning or anything. Needlesness to say I can't get a vaccination program without knowing what to give. We do use pilligard every year for pink eye and safeguar for worming, other than that I don't know what to give what animals. Can someone give me a simple list of vaccines and to whom they should be given? Thanks in advance

I'm not sure about your area but call your Vet they can tell you what to use. I use Cattle-Vac 7 for blackleg and DurGuard 6+VL5 for the rest.

I recomend the Bovishield Gold program from Pfizer. If you can use Modified live vaccines. Only if your cows are open ready to breed, not bred!!! MLV vacs are better.

the 2 vets we use suggested Virashield 6 every 6 months, at least 2 blackleg shots, and pinkeye vaccine.

There are soooo many variables for vaccines/areas. I would suggest calling your local County Extension Office, or check on the internet for your ag Univ web site.
I understand your vet's too busy to tell you what you need.
I strongly advise using Modified Live Vaccines (Pfizers Gold program is excellent).
If you vaccinate your COWS PRIOR to breeding, than it is save to vaccinate your calves at 3+ months old. That way your calves are already vaccinated when they have to go thru the stress of weaning. I vaccinate calves with MLV also. Cows in this area should be vaccinated with Lepto every 6 months, but the first shot needs a booster given 2-4 weeks later?? (depends on the product used) than every 6 months.
We also vaccinate for Pasturella, Clostridials. Also, you may be needing to use a grub/lice killing dewormer in the fall, and you can still used the Safeguard in the late spring.
You can check out pharmaceuticals at their web sites.

Go for a drive. Find a neighbour who does what you figure to be a good job and ASK!

Never met a rancher who was not willing to give advice if asked politely.

Bez!
