Vaccinating Pregnant Cows

From the label there seems to be no restriction. For the best answer, ask your vet.
BINGO, correct answer. I would also worm and pour them for external parasites

Covexin 8 is a Bacterin-Toxoid. Vaccinates against the clostridial group of bacteria, not viruses so no MLV. I use it because in addition to the other Clostridials, it includes a Toxoid for tetanus. Since it is not a virus vaccine, not a MLV, thus not an abortion risk to pregnant cows.

I use Ivomec injectable as a wormer. Studies show it has better effectiveness than pour-on parasiticides. Also controls other parasites like ticks and lice.

I was once told you cannot deworm a pregnant cow. Is that true?

Read the label. Some parasiticides may affect pregnancy. Ivomec contains Ivermectin. There is not a pregnancy warning but there is a holding time before slaughter.

From the manufacturer's label:
In breeding animals (bulls and cows), ivermectin and clorsulon used at the recommended level had no effect on breeding performance.

CJC,

You are welcome. Beware that some parasiticides which contain agent/agents other than ivermectin may affect pregnancy or the capacity to breed. Read the entire label.

If you don't have access to a label, go to Valley Vet. Look up the product you are using. Click on it. When the product comes up on the screen, scroll to the bottom where it says "Information". A tab will drop down. Go to Manufactuure's Label. Click that. Then enjoy your reading experience. :cboy:

We do it twice a year with no ill affects.

To my knowledge, of the dewormers currently on the market, only albendazole (Valbazen) has a cautionary statement about use in pregnant animals - and (I'm pulling this out of my head(or somewhere else), so check the label) it's primarily a caution not to use it in the first trimester, as it may have teratogenic effects.
Otherwise, all the others are quite safe, to the best of my recollection.

inyati got it right... bacterins (killed bacterial vaccines) are safe for use in pregant cows, as are killed/inactivated viral products.
