Been looking at utvs for a few years now but just find it hard to pay what they want for one. My question is for those of you that have them how well do you like them? Do you find that they are worth the costs? I keep thinking a old beater small 4x4 pickup will do most everything a utv will plus you can tag it and run on the road. Also it can be bought at a fraction of the price of utv. So whats yalls thoughts?

Can’t really compare the two as they are two different animals. I would hate to be without one. Not sure you really need a top of the line UTV as they get expensive a Kawasaki 610 or whatever they call them now would do just fine I think.

My son bought a Polaris Ranger.Really handy for two people to ride in and get around over the farm.I'm not sure it will ever pay for itself in our situation but he uses it for his family going up into the woods and has been getting in firewood with it since it is so wet here.
An old small pickup would be cheaper and drier o ride in plus haul more stuff but wouldn't go where this thing does.
It's all about what you really need and can afford.I can't justify one when I have a 3pt lift/box that I can hook on the smaller tractor.Hauls more, have tractor etc.His is,however, faster and easier to get around in.Plus seat belts and ROPS when herding cows.

Can't do with out one. Trucks won't get me where I need to go like a utv. It can be a little more upfront but the maintenance and upkeep is no where near the cost of a vehicle. I can weave thru barns, pens, traps, etc where even a small pick up can't go

There are good deals on utvs in the $5-10K if your going for functionality and not the newest gadgets and biggest hp.

I've been looking at older trucks for a "farm truck" and they aren't exactly cheap any more either.

A big selling point for me gas always been if I stick that utv in the pasture... I may have to walk back to the truck... but Im not walking all the way home.

Good points, i knew i wasn’t comparing apples to apples i was just curious as to others thoughts and opinions. Brute what kind are you running? Hd ive looked at those and i think the next one up. They do seem to be good machines for the money.

I have a '14 and a '16. Kaws have a 3 year warranty where some have less. Plus, they don't change them often, so they just get better over time.

I was in the small pickup crowd until a little over a year ago, finally spring for a new Polaris Ranger. It'll go places a pickup won't dream of and not tear up the fields as bad in the process. If something happened to mine today, I'd replace it tomorrow.

4 wheeler is cheaper and will do the same job, utv's are good for old men, and hauling around the family.
Don't know if you can justify it as a work vechical if your just hauling people around 75% of time. Kind of like buying a shortbed maga cab pickup and calling it a work truck.

I personally buy Kawasaki Mules. Ive always had good luck with the 3010s and not Im really liking the Mule Pros. They aren't the fastest, or best at this or that but they are a good all around work horse, that is enjoyable for pleasure, and they have a low upkeep cost.

I use my Mule Pro for every thing. I work, play, hunt, relax, cruise it around town, trick or treat out of it, taught my son, and younger family members to drive in it, do yard work... I have even played golf out of it... and probably more. Its handy as a shirt pocket and was worth every penny to me.

Each brand has their pros and cons. I use them all hunting, working, and playing. The Can-Am was my #2 behind the Mule. I also like the JD Gators. Kubota has some new cvt clutch, IRS, models. I like riding in the Polaris but the maintenance costs keep me away from them. The 4 seater Polaris, Can-Am, Gators are a mile long though... like 15'6... and that has kept me away too.

90% of everything done around here is on a UTV. My 02 Kawasaki Mule is still going strong at my neighbors.
I bought a bigger one in 15.
I can go places on a Mule a tractor can’t go much less a truck.
I live in a rainforest so bigger is not always better.

I like the ability to just step in and out of them to open and close gates. A lot easier than getting leg over a bike or getting in and out of a truck.

What brands are big down under?

All major brands are available and well represented in use. I see a few Kubota locally as there is a dealer in town. i think there are a lot of diesel JD Gators out west on the larger properties though I think they still like their Landcruisers to do the longer runs to check the water.

I am on a tighter budget and have a CFMoto, about 3 years old now and it seems to be doing the job well.

I have two 4 wheelers and a UTV. They just aren’t the same at all unless you only use them to drive around. My UTV is so much more useful. For example, I have a set up that I can run 2 or 3 strands of barbed wire at one time out of the bed, plus all other fencing tools and a chainsaw are there too. Honestly, if it weren’t for the kids I wouldn’t have a 4 wheeler any more.

We're probably going to trade ours in next Spring if you want Jer's Rancher as a back up or for your wife. Didn't pony up for heated seats this time but still has the radio & all the gadgets ;-)

The little equipment dealer in town here sells Hammerhead 150s for under 4k. They seem to move quite a few of them.

JMO, I'd rather have an ATV, unless it's cold. UTVs have their uses though.

Gators, Mules, and Kubotas are the only ones that are purpose built for work.

I have a big Kubota and a Honda rancher. The rancher is used for checking and moving cows and other short quick trips. It also damages less when its wet. It gets a lot of miles during calving season. The Kubota is used on everything work related and keeps my pickup out of the field. I wouldn't want to do without either.

Both are used for spot spraying.
