Update on calf w/issues

Lil' gal is eating better today, though takes quite a few breaks. I would call her a "binge drinker". HA HA
Temp is up today 102.5, but she is more mobile; not speedy by any means but up more often.
Poo is more solid though she doesn't go but maybe 2x day.
Snot still there but less than yesterday.

Going to call vet now, see how much of suggested meds will run me. This free calf is not free...

dex is cheap and nuflor is really not that bad of a price, especially for a brood spectrum anti biotic. Banamine can be really hard on the gut and for best results should be given in the vein ,I only use that only as a pain killer anyways ,my preferred anti inflammatory drug is a prednisone..

Try giving it 3 feedings a day in smaller amounts , that may help. Good luck.

Your vet may just suggest a small dose of pen each day for a week or so.

Misunderstanding=she has been to vet, 48 hrs ago (the day after we got her). Vet gave her nuflor (sp?) but she told me "antibiotic that would be in system for 4 days." Didn't know name of it till I talked to her just a bit ago, which is what I meant when I said I was going to run the meds y'all mentioned by her.
The dex won't work right now, contraindicator w/the eye ointment for cornea scratch.
Already doing the many small meals plan with her, but compared to even a day ago she is consuming more per feeding.
This evening vet said that if temp goes up, things start looking like going downhill to bring calf in on Friday, probably go w/banamine.

Well it sounds like you're on the right track with her. Doing all that can be done at this time. Hopefully she and mother nature will play along and she'll do okay.

Dumb vet. If the calf starts goin down hill it will be dead by friday. I see your vet is a woman. No offense but every woman vet I have run into is afraid to get dirty and only wants to work on small animals. They usually are not as astute as male vets either. No offense to any women on here as there are knowledgeable cattle men and women on here but I just think some women vets are lacking just like men vets and they given the other women or men vets a bad name.

Mine is a women - the best you can find. The last man I had out got into my nursing pen with a sick cow - ended up pinning him into a corner until I slammed her with a gate to distract her. Brains vs brawn I guess. :lol:

Sounds like you are doing as well as you can with her. If she's eating, then that means she is feeling OK. Keep a close eye on her eating, chances are that will be the first indication if she starts feeling bad again. Nuflor is a pretty good drug. If she starts to go downhill again, though get her back to the vet as quickly as you can, don't wait til Friday. It doesn't take long for a small calf like this one to really crash.

As for the comments on Women vets, ours is a guy, simply because of logistics (he's 10 min away). He's a great vet. But, I know of at least 3 other exceptional women vets within a 2 hour radius of us......

Considering it was Wednesday late evening when I spoke w/her (recall calf went to vet Monday evening first time), today is Thanksgiving I am surprised vet clinic open tomorrow/Friday to begin with. I have a lot of confidence in this gal, she is very patient with the animals (she's my vet for horses also and I tend to "vet shop" as I prefer vets w/a good bedside manner so to say). So for her to say "Bring her in Friday" isn't a bad thing and I know that she means "Drop everything, don't bother calling even, get that calf here ASAP if something seems amiss."
Gender of vet is irrelevant to me. I feel like I've dealt with good and bad all around. Male to female ratio is greater so 1 female vet that is "bad" will stand out compared even to the 5 "bad" male vets.

So back to Bella (my daughter happens to be a Twilight fan, hence the name of calf). This morning downed a pint lickety split plus a smidge more. Ears perked up when I went into stall, tearing significantly less from the worse eye. Still snotty though it's more clear, does not have brown/red appearance.

Doc says she is the best young vet he has ever seen. She sure as hell ain't afraid to get dirty.What i can't beleive is the ladies on the board have not riped you a new a$$.

Would just be wasting space and time.

They say " better to be THOUGHT stupid and remain silent, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt".

I use 2 lady vets, both are hard-working, tenacious, savvy with livestock, and just little bitty things.

A couple of the male vets I have used didn't want to get dirty, and would make a snap judgement and treat the
animal for the WRONG thing rather than admit they had erred!! I say BS to that

it isn't your GENDER that makes you a good or bad vet, it's the work ethic and common sense!!

Did anyone ask you for your opinion? I sure as he77 didnt. I was not trying to be an ass just stating fact as I have experienced things. Your just mad because of the embryo post is all it is.
