I dont think he is in severe need of feed. I think he needs some up keep and I do agree ,He needs a rear end. He is what Doc would call a funnel butt.

It's not flesh you want to see on the rear as much as it is muscle. A very thin animal will not have much muscle expression. They do look weak muscled. This bull looks pretty thin. Good quality hay or feed...ie: protein will improve his condition. Post a pic after he has gained some weight back. He seems pretty heavy boned and the heifers you posted seem heavy boned also. The natural thickness appears to be there over the top....just judging from the pics you have posted. The bull does appear to have a loose sheath, which is undesirable. A little higher nutrition level may help them muscle up more....give it a try. It would be interesting to see what reactions you get if you post pics after they have gained some weight, but just judgeing from these pics I would say selecting for more muscle would be a step in the right direction. Muscle is one thing and natural thickness is another and I would say what you need is more muscle in the cattle, which you can select for in future generations. The pics you have posted of the bull and heifers makes them look very uniform. Are they closely related? Linebred? Do you have pedigrees you could post? They are interesting looking, different really. i would prefer less white on the front legs, but that is a minor thing. The kinky, curly hair is somewhat discredited in the states and they are probably more acclimated to a cooler climate.

Is in severe need of groceries. I would not use him. Especially if he gets that run down breeding cows. Also, has one of the worse sheaths on a hereford I have ever seen.

overly dramatic.

the bull is in fine condition post-breeding. he has 6-9 months to get into pre-breeding shape and will probably be just fine. i am not saying he is a great looking bull, but his condition is about average for breeding a group of cows.

don't let these people get you into a panic.

how do you go about putting flesh on the rear

Better genetics= more muscle on the rear. You cant feed that it has to be bred in.

this we can agree on! ;-)

If he was the best bull you could find and afford at the time he was the right bull. I'm not crazy about him but I've seen a whole lot worse posted on here that people are very proud of.

and unless you have a very specific (real) reason to base a selection on EBV/EPD, you might as well pick one at random without looking at them.
