UFC sells

Most everyone knows I'm not real fond of PROFESSIONAL sports. I really enjoyed ufc in its early days. I used to actually buy the pay per view fights and me and my boys would watch them.. like everything else, fame and fortune has turned it into a circus act.

Good for them. Dana white has done a he'll of a job.

$2 million to $4 billion in that short period of time really is amazing. So far, it appears the only real change will be no more Frank Fertitta. But we’ll see. I still enjoy watching what I can, though I haven’t bought a PPV for years. With the internet, I can stay up to date on everything that happens, without having to stay up past midnight. :D

I need a rebate. In 1984 I tried a MMA fight, I forgot what the entry fee cost me, but I'll never forget getting my ankle broken and but beat.

Thats the beauty of the sport- every one who participates, will take some lumps along the way. Gives a great perspective. Theres a quote from a movie that goes something like " how much do you really know about yourself, until you been punched in the face?"

When i first started training BJJ, worked out in a quality MMA. Lots of cops, big fellas serious about fighting, and a few real soild BJJ girls. 5' 11"and 220 lbs got choked out by a 115 lb girl before i knew what happened. I wasntthe only one either. Thats when i realized i better learn some of this BJJ

I know this about myself! I don't need to be punched in the face to learn more! I would rather pay a physciatrist or better yet, get one of the users on Cattle Today who are always anxious to give you a free assessment. :D

Yes Ron, I'm certain there are more than a few that would line up to oblige either one of us. :lol2:
As far at the quote, I think it was addressing the deep primal response of fight or flight.
Nothing like all those chemicals in your brain helping to process the pain, taste and smell of your own blood. Some become go into attack mode, some fold up shop. Meh, I always liked the quote (personal reasons I suppose).

I got that fight or flight figured out by the age of 6. My brother was a lot bigger than me. But I was a lot smarter.
PS: faster too.

Only when I have to now. All my son's wrestled or currently wrestle; so, I get worked over pretty good with that. BJJ is similiar to grappling, but different in that you focus on defense and taking whatever your opponent gives you and disabling them with it. Like an arm, leg or choke for example. Can be very effective against someone much larger. It's extremely physically demanding, but you learn how to conserve your energy while your opponent expends theirs. Thankfully, I have only ever had to use it once in 'real' life (outside a competition), but it was very effective at shutting down some jerk off who was beating the pizz out of his lady.

Sounds like a good compliment to kickboxing - 1 u expend energy, BJJ you conserve. Did u tell guy to stop and he didn't or how I get involved

No. I was leaving a party with a lady I was dating. As we were walking down the driveway to get to my truck parked down the street, we walked past a car. In the sedan, was a guy on top of his girl, absolutely beating the heck out of her. He was just throwing shot after shot and she was screaming and crying. Purely reaction on my part. Didn't think for a second (dangerous). I opened the car door, grabbed him by his shirt, pulled him out and put him on his back. Stayed right on top of him and used a front cross choke to put him to sleep with his own T shirt. He went to sleep before he had a chance to so much as attempt to strIke me. Picked him and threw him in the back seat of the car and told the gal she had a few minutes to get out of here before he woke up. Turned out, she was a cousin of the gal I was dating (neither of us realized at the time I intervened). Got her to safety. Her face was pretty swollen and bruised. Found out about a year later, that same guy shot himself in the head.

Good for you bball that took some real courage, most people don't want to get involved. So BJJ must also teach u about diffusing situations like that?

The real focus is on positioning yourself to take least amount of damage as necessary, while also positioning yourself to utilize whatever your opponent gives you. You train in a gi, which is useful in real life scenarios. Rarely, in real life are folks fighting in nothing but spandex shorts. So you learn to use gi (clothing) to also choke your opponent. I usually deescalate situations pretty well before they become physical (lots of training via career). Wasn't happening on that particular night.

BTW, huge fan of the striking via MT. Nasty knees, elbows and dirty boxing are super effective tools to have in the tool box.

I'll leave all this fighting crap to you young folks. My hand was so swollen up after a minor incident at a Mexican restaurant last week I couldn't hold a fork. A fist to the temple works good on most folks, and the bigger one's need to be throat punched. My biggest problem is that you can't shoot or stab a-holes, and I can't bring myself to walk away yet. It really stinks to get old. I think I need a tazer.
