You all are gonna hate me for this..

I recently had the opportunity to spend quite a bit of time this past year in Canada. Specifically the Calgary area. While there I couldnt help but notice the quality of steaks served at restraurants (not just high class joints) far exceeds what I casually encounter in the U.S. I even went to the grocery stores and experienced the same thing.

Any thoughts on this?

Your finding out what the rest of us Northerners in the Igloos have known for a long time.... the steak is always better up here than in the restaurants down there.... lots of people claim it is because of the corn that is fed versus the Barley up here.... just my $.02

Can't agree more!

Gotta love good Alberta beef... 8)

Living on the border, I've had both as well and know many who have. The American steaks are very well marbled and have exceptional flavour, but the flavour of the fat is not as appealing as barley-fed cattle. I eat everything on the plate when given a Canadian steak (except possibly a bone or two), but I often leave 1/2 the fat when I eat a US steak...it just gets sickening.

Barley vs Corn.... Hmmmm

Any other thoughts?

I like my barley and my corn in liquid form!

last year I finished a steer on oats--thats the best Ive had for a long time--The butcher where I take it to get cut up said it would grade A -so thats a long way from the highest grade-but the taste was excellent I dont think its economically viable to finish cattle on oats---but I do believe that corn has something to do with the taste --pigs in ontario are fed corn -sure a lot stronger taste than hogs fed barley in western canada

Everything tastes and feels better when you're away from home

I always thought everything tastes awful when I was away from home...I reckon when I was a kid I got used to my mother's cookin' and now i'm used to my wife's cookin...guess after 45 year my taste buds have adapted only to my wife's cookin

Thank you all for you response. I certainly appreciate it.... If its any consolation to you all I thought the beer tasted like SH**!!!

I'll agree that ALL beer tastes like crap. :P

No Im pretty sure its just your Canadian beer. Thats what makes the steak taste so good by comparison.

Absolutely no other logical explanation for it!

I did consider an alian microbe in Canadian beef theory, but quickly decided it wasnt realistic.
