When you tie more than 1 calf in a pen at one time how far away do you tie each one and how long should each one's rope be for the first few times?

It depends on what you are doing with them and how tame they are.
Calm +working with them=about 5ft
so so+ working= about 10ft
calm+just tying= about 2ft
only about a foot of slack
Every morning when I put my steers in the barn, they get tied at 'show level'. what this meand is, I tie their heads up where I want them to hold it when I show them. To get an idea on how high this is, go to some websites that have pictures of winners on it and look how high the calves heads are being held. Mine stand like this for at least 5 hours each day so they get used to standing and keeping their head at that level.
During the day after I rinse them and blow them down, I tie them under the fans with their head up for about 2 hours, walk them to water, then tie them back up with about 2 1/2' of slack so they can lie down for one hour. After that, they get lead to water again and have their heads tied up another 2 hours. And they are tied about 4-5 feet away from each other.
well right after i feed(6am) they get rinsed and then put under fans at show height for 3 hours. then they get to run around in the loose pens for about an hour with water. then they get to lay down tied for 3 hours with misters( not on the white or roan calves) then they get let out in the pens for water then they get rinsed and tied under fans for 1 hour. then they get tied lowered to lie down for 3 hours. then they get rinsed and dryed. then they get feed and let out to pasture
