Hypothetical...If you buy an otherwise tremendous bull that has twisted testicles, what are the chances that he passes that genetic flaw on to his sons?

Semen companies will not buy bulls that have this characteristic. What are the pitfalls of buying a bull with twisted nuts?

This bull will have reduced fertility? or will his offspring will have reduced fertility?

If he is above average on semen test, do the twisted testicles matter? Will the twisted testicles be passed on to sons?

I said it was just off the top of my head! I would think that he might have reduced fertility if they're twisted to the point that the testicles can;t go up and down for heating and cooling as they should.

Ask your vet what he/she thinks. I would think that she/he has seen the problem and would have some basis for an opinion

If he is a tremendous bull as you say then i would have BS exam on him and if he's ok i wouldnt be afraid of that flaw doughtful he well pass it on are that flaw would have shown up before more than likely just a isolated case

If he is a tremendous bull as you say then i would have BS exam on him and if he's ok i wouldnt be afraid of that flaw doughtful he well pass it on are that flaw would have shown up before more than likely just a isolated case

It all depends on how badly its twisted. if its so bad that the epididimi is clearly pointing in opposite directions, I would not even consider using the bull.

If the testicles are still hanging side by side and looks otherwise like a scrotum should except that its not set completely square it probaly should not affect fertility unless like Dun siad it interferes with the scrotum regulating the temperature of the testes.

post a pic if possible, would be interesting to see how much it varies from the norm.

Remember that a good trait might be passed on by the bull, but according to Murphy's law a bad trait most certainly will be passed on.

I have never heard of or seen this condition - however I would think that it could be caused by the same genetic syndrome that results in monorchidism, or one testicle retained in the body cavity. This does not result in sterility, but could have an effect on the bull's progeny. In any case, it is a genetically inherited characteristic, although heterozygous in heritability. I would avoid using him as a breeder.

I have seen this in some RA bloodlines. The cord that allows the testicles to be pulled up or let down isn't directly centered. It is off to one side and creates the twist. You can see what I mean when you look at the testicles from the back. We have stayed away from these bloodlines. If I remember right they had trouble getting semen to freeze from twisted testicled cattle.

Now Im not 100% but we have had two full brothers.. which were the best bulls we have ever raised had slightly twisted nuts exactly the same which leads me to believe that in fact it is a genetic trait being passed....
