What makes cows want to tussle? I understand establishing the pecking order, and dominance.

I have a group of 30 or so cows that have been together four years. I go down to move them this morning and two sets of cows are tussling pretty good. Two ongoing fights.
 
Hormones, usually right before & after they calve but some will get feisty when they're in heat. As you already know, dominance/pecking order. If a cow is sick or lame she's a prime target, especially if she has a high ranking status.

I've also noticed my girls get fired up right before or during bad weather.
 
I've found open cows will tussle with bred cows, or maybe visa versa... they also get into groups of haves and have nots...
 
It was just odd today. I have seen a couple tussle maybe twice. Today two groups just would not stop going at it.

These girls fought for 3 days straight. 3 year age difference but pound for pound it was a fair fight. The white face had a noticeable limp and the baldie ended up with a nasty gash on her forehead. Have no clue what prompted it or who eventually won. It happens.
 
Some cows just CAN'T STAND certain other cows, they definitely have their friends and foes..
I have a pair of them right now, Kama (Goddess of love) and Durga (Goddess of war).. they fight every chance they get and they're really serious about it.
