After all the years of being in the cattle business, I still find it amazing how a cow can have a calf in pouring down rain (3.5 inches yesterday alone). Then, soon after it is up and nursing momma, with it still raining hard. I thought, what the heck, and went ahead, roped and then banded the little fella with momma standing close by sniffing each and every move I made. I released him, and he just jumped up, and went back to feeding in no time!

I marvel at that every year - We calve from late Jan through Feb. and they never seem to calve on that bright sunny 30 degree day - they'll wait until the snow comes so hard you can't see 5 feet in front of you and the temp drops to 0 in five minutes! Go figure?
Someone told me once it has to do with the drop in barometric pressure - I think it's their way of revenge - making me come out at all hours in a blizzard to make sure everything is OK - This year I rod out with a big thermal mug of coffee - had to get off the horse stuck the cup in the gullet of the saddle - was down drying off the calf for less than 5 minutes - when I got back in the saddle my coffee was frozen!

We had one born in a thunder storm and it hailed on him! His momma tried to shield her but he had a rough first day. He was up and running around later that afternoon. Amazing!

Back in my misspent youtrh when we winter calved I've had the calf chains freeze to my fingers. Man I love May-ALOT lol.
