so my main goal to get accomplished today was to mow the horse pasture b/c it was overgrown with dogfennel weeds and i couldnt see the horses anymore. ok, exaggerating, i could see their ears. So i hop on the johndeere with the big mower attached that has 4 blades. i'm mowing and everything is uneventful, i'm trucking right along and its taking a lot less time than was expected. I was finished in like two and a half hours. We have some old telephone and powerline poles that dad had drug up into the front of the cow pasture from all the way from the back of the farm years ago when they replaced them with big concrete poles where the georgia power lines run thru part of the property. he just sort of scattered them around so they would be easy to pick up later. 6 years later, i'm tired of them always being in my way so i decide i'll move them with the tractor b/c it just so happens i have the right front end loader attachment hooked up for the job. sis is taking Sunny the dog for a walk in the pasture...

So I'm moving poles and all of the sudden out of nowhere it starts raining. I see sis and Sunny way out in the pasture. I chuckled like the guy on the Simpsons, " haaahh hah!". they are sooo gonna get wet. I'm in the cab so i briefly consider going to get her out of the rain but by now she is already wet so oh well. i continue my work as they run back to the house (only about half a mile). So i move 3 poles and am going to get the one that is most in my way and has plagued the manuevering of trucks and tractors for years. I have a feeling of satisfaction about the work i am getting done today. i am backing up and adjusting the front end loader accordingly to get under the pole when all of the sudden *********CLANG!!!******and BAM!!too**maybe a little POW while we're at it.******
WTKrap?! I am struck by lightning! I didnt even know it was thundering OR lightning. Though the ligthning is grounded by the rubber of the tractor tires i still feel a tingly brain-cell-sizzled sensation. So i hurry back home on the tractor and go inside and ask Mom if she heard it and she was on the front porch and said it was so loud it made her scream, lol. Sunny, by the way is deathly afraid of thunder and becomes a nervous wreck at the slightest rumble.

Tsk, Tsk, Tsk, that'll teach ya' to laugh at your sister getting caught out in the rain and not going over to pick her up. Now, you run tell you're sorry... 8)

Seriously, I'm glad you're ok.

The rubber tires don't ground the tractor, they isolate it from grounding, prevents the electricity from flowing through (hopefully). My cousin and I were tarping down a wagon load of square bales about ten years ago when lightning struck the tarp in the middle of the wagon. He was hanging on the back rack and I was standing on the front, neither of us touching the ground. He thought I was hit and I thought he got it. Couldn't see each other, everything just went white. Every hair on each of us was standing straight up, didn't hurt either one of us or the wagon, I think we both messed our britches though.

I was in our chicken house when it got hit. Its five hundred foot long with cables running all along the cieling.
The lights went out(completely black in there) and at the same time a magnificent fire ball whizzed by my head and ran up and down the wires.
It only lasted a second or two but it was impressive.

I go about my business just the same, you're not going to leave this earth til your number's up, and it's not your decision when.

about 5 years ago lightning struck an oak tree about 50 yards from me as i was walking away from it. that was super loud. lots of small pops followed by a loud boom. the tree lit up like christmas tree lights flashing on and off with each little pop and bark flying everywhere with the grand finale boom.

needless to say i took off running instead of walking after that.

as best i can tell out of the corner of my eye and behind me it must have hit the mower to have made the loud CLANG?
all i saw was white light for a split second. definitely an experience.
