Trick to more solid bale?

I am baling this year with a Hesston 745 round baler. This is my first rodeo with a round baler. I have run small squares, 3x4 squares, and stackers in the past. What is the secret to a "solid" round bale?

I put a few together this afternoon and they just seem too loose, but it was without any dew and popcorn dry hay. In the morning I will give it a shot with some dew and see if that helps much.

I weave back and forth during the entire bale.

check the tension adjustment on your baler

make sure your feeding a consistant windrow into the pickup Like inbred said you may have to feed oneside then move over and feed the other

speed your PTO up and slow your ground speed down

make sure your windrows are consistant

New baler or used baler. Looks like your model baler has hyd tension cylinders. There should be a valve to adjust the pressure. Could be that the cylinders need oil in them.

Some balers have a soft core when the roll starts. Is it a belt or drum baler ?

I agree a good windrow and running a slower speed really help more than anything.

I don't know what all it could be. a good windrow can make a lot of diffrence. i have a hesston baler and it makes some of the best bales i or alot of people i know have ever seen

I run at 1500 psi and get a pretty tight bale.

Seems like it might be more of a too dry crop. They are getting better.

I have heard a local farmer complain that some of his rolls are too tight and it is causing his cows to develop sore mouths. I feed square bales so am just passing this along. Anyone ever heard this before?

Depends if you have a soft or hard core baler....

One thing to remember is to make sure you fill in the ends of the bale, because the centre will fill in itself.

Go slow when starting the core, then puter' in high gear and go.

How many wraps of string are usually on the outer edge of large round bales? Ours are falling off.

They are most likely falling off because of the shape of the bale . Try feeding each side of the baler and not the middle . The middle will fill in on it's own . This will give your bales a square shoulder and hold the string better . I stopped using string but when I used it I put 4 wraps on the ends .

We had someone bale for us and there are only 2 strings on each end, he tried to tell us that was all the baler would do. We have fed a lot of bales in the past and never seen bales with only 2 strings on the end. Will be looking for a new person to bale or looking for a baler, we have the cutter and the rake.

he was cheap an put the bare minimun of string on the hay.
