Went to a visitation tonight for the father of a friend of mine. He fought with the 2nd Infantry Division in WWII, landed at Omaha Beach on D-Day + 1, and saw extensive combat from then until Germany surrendered the following May. He was awarded a Silver Star, a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. Knowing him, you would never imagine he could have seen what he must have seen and done what he must have done during those times. He came home to raise a fine family and farmed for almost 50 years. He laughed a lot and always had a smile on his face. He was what Tom Brokaw had in mind when he wrote about The Greatest Generation. There aren't too many left.

Van, thanks for the post, so much can be learned from the lives of great Americans like your friend . We stand on the shoulders of giants and to a large extent I think we've become too blind, too selfish, too self centered to realize it . My prayers are with his family .

Ditto that.

Hey Hey Ryder. Nice to see ya.

I am so proud of the organization here called "Louisiana Honor Air" They fly old veterans to Washington for the day to see the WWII museum and other things and then fly em back. I have donated over and over until it hurts and yet it still feels good. We welcome them home that night with a heros welcome. Its awesome
