Tractor rear wheel locked up

I was bringing my tractor from one place to another Tuesday evening and suddenly it started jumping and shaking (while on the road), occasionally running smoothly for a few seconds. I needed to get one roll of hay, and so I thought I would limp it to the place the hay needed to be and check it. I picked up the hay, and when I put it in reverse, it seems that one or both rear wheels are totally locked up. Front Wheel Drive is not affected. This is a twenty-two-year-old Agco tractor that has been really dependable. AGCO stopped making the agco brand about 12 years ago, but normally, parts are still available. My thinking is that it is the rear differential, but I am not a mechanic. Any thoughts, and am I totally screwed?

No clue but does it have wet brakes, which it probably does. Could it be the brakes locking? If it was brakes you would have heard a squawking noise. Did you hear any noise while it was doing this?

Drain the oil and see what comes out. If there's any sort of cover on the bottom of the rear axle take it off and see what falls out.

Brakes, planitaries, ring and pinion, etc.

Yes, it has wet brakes, and no, there was no sound at all, just the sudden jumping and shaking. I will drain the oil, hopefully this weekend. I haven't paid attention and have no idea if it has any cover under the axle.

You might try mashing the rear differential lock going forward and backward and see if it is working properly. Also check and see if the lift arms and pto are working. If you were hauling a bale the lift arms are probably working. Also, if you have used the hydraulics recently that eliminates the hydraulic oil level, again the lift arms would eliminate that. If the tractor has a cab the gears linkage could be no working properly as I had that to happen on a Kubota until I took the floor out of the cab and lubed the linkage up good.

When changing the oil look close at the filter and maybe even cut it open and if it has a magnet on the drain plug look at it closely.

Maybe Chevy will be along shortly as he can give some good information.
