Totally Baffled

Pulled shotgun down today side by side for the grandson to go squirrel hunting with.
When I broke it open to check the bore's looked like something in the left barrel.
After further inspection the screw in choke was peeled like a bananna toward the end of the barrel.
The barrel has no damage only the choke.
I had to take the gun to the local gunsmith as I couldn't get it out.
When the gunsmith looked at it his exact words were that is impossible.

What has me scratching my head this gun has never shot anything but lead birdshot.
I am clueless on how a stainless choke could do this.
Grandson learned a valuable lesson about checking the bore before going hunting.

Is it possible the choke was threaded into far? SS isn't the hardest alloy around. Maybe enough lead going by it caught a lip on the choke?

Maybe here comes the but. It is supposed to be flush on the inside just like the right barrel is.
It is the damest thing I ever saw on a scattergun and I have been doing this for a long time.
Thing that crossed my mind was maybe bought a box of shells that was mislabeled and it was steel.
This was a modified choke tube.
When the gunsmith gets it out it is going back to the manufacture.

You would know by the weight if you had some steel shot.

CB I had something similiar happen to my Beretta. I sent it back and they said the choke tube had unscrewed. And the shot caught the bottom of the choke tube and peeled it in. They sent a new barrel and choke tubes free of charge.

That sound's like something I could buy as I had not even thought ot that.
That is exactly what my tube looks like. When that tube gets out Tru Lock tubes are going in instead of the factory tubes.
For some reason it is the only shotgun I have that doesn't have Tru Lock's in it.
