Fantacy land here. If you could purchase 100 cows from three proven, quality breeders from any breed, who would you choose and why. You can also get 3 Bulls to breed your new cow and 20 straws of semen. These are the only cows that you can have to start your new foundation herd. Who would you choose?

I would probably just mix and match to keep going on the commercial production line as we do now.

This place would not likely change much - other than to ask for at least a buck forty at sale time! :D

Too much work for this old guy tonight - but I would bet there wil be a few who get into this in a big way. I will be interested in the responses.

Regards

Bez?

I think I would take 30 Beckton Red Angus cows, 30 Buffalo Crk RA cows, and 40 GDAR Angus cows. I would take a Jorgensen Angus bull, A Beckton Red Angus bull and a Ohlde Angus bull. The semen would be 10 Straws of 6807 and 10 Straws of Rambo 502.

I think the breeders of these cattle are proven programs with longevity and integrity with mighty fine cattle to boot. That's the kind of place I want to get cattle from!

I can think of a few unnamed people that I would be interested to hear their answers!

hmmm.

I reckon in my shopping cart i would put 30 brahmans from JD Hudgins i guess, 50 beefmaster from somebody, and 20 brangus from Steiner. I'd get a polled hereford for my brahmans, AI a bunch of beefmasters to LBar5502, and get some angus bulls for cleanup and to use on the brangus. then over the years i could mix and match bulls.

Well I would have to go with 40 cows from Linwood Angus, 10 from Dusty Inn Farms (angus) and 50 Shorthorns from Star P Farms.

Bull 1: M double B Livestock
Bull 2: Prime Time Cattle Company
Bull 3:Shadybrook Farms

Semen: 10 straws-Ar Su Lu Kool
10 straws-Shadybrook Scotty

This is a neat thing.

Cows would come from GDAR, Sitz's, Finks, N Bar, Jorgensons

20 straws would include
5-6807
5 Emulation 31
5- CH Revival 104
5 CAR Tracker 904

Herdsires would come from Connelly's, Jorgensons and High Valley

BA, how tough is it to attain Rambo 502 semen down there?

I am surprised by Rambo being a finalist for you. Depends I guess if you have deep and wide chested cattle that will retain their spring of rib.

Need something to keep that hide a little more loose!

BA - The fact that it only took you 6 minutes to answer this question tells me that you have given this subject some long thought prior to today! And the producers that you chose and the breeds that you selected are well thought out! I agree with you completely, even though there are a lot of breeder's in the business who would fit that criteria. Ohlde certainly belongs with them, and probably Sitz and Stevenson Basin would qualify, also. But, G A R would not get my business! (For Bulls, that is! Cows - maybe?) 'Nuff said!

Well, I would start out at Star Lake and take 40 cows, then move on to Mohican West and pick up 30 cows there, then head back south to Ward Ranch, Ned & Jan Wards, to pick up 30 cows there to make up my herd of 100.

Pasture Expose my cows to:
1. BR Moler ET
2. SB 122L Git-R-Done 19R ET
3. SHF Red Oak M326 R96

20 units would be on Remitall Boomer 46B.

This is fasinating. :cboy:

SEC - I was surprised to see that you would select 5 straws from Emulation 31, even though he was a fine bull. In my opinion - he was the source of Temperment problems carrying down to N Bar Emulation EXT and beyond! I saw Emulation 31 when Ankony had their AI set-up at Bennett, CO about 25 +/- years ago and that sucker would kill anything or anyone that looked at him. They had a tough time collecting him. He was like some Thoroughbred Horses - Hyper and Crazy. - - But a heck of a bull for the time!

Good choice there in Shadybrook Scotty!! :D :P ;-)

I hate to publicly admit that I am this CHEAP; but probably the breeder who would give me the best deal! Holden, Cooper, Debter, Star Lake, Owen, Harper, EE, Remitall, Ridgeview, etc AS WELL as some of the not nationally known local guys like Hicks and Dr McMillin have herds good enough that I could be very satisfied taking females out the top of their herds.....though the now dispersed Frank Felton's herd WOULD have been my top choice to yank a 100 females out of in it's day.

I'd take cows from Debter, EE (Mississippi), and Lone Star, and bulls from Cooper, Holden, and Jamison. Cows would already be acclimated to Southern heat, humidity, fescue, and insects. Then I could spend the rest of my time doctoring pinkeye and cutting off horns. ;-)

If I was to start out all new, this is what I may do. But I haven't thought about it to much and it is early in the morning, so I may change my mind if a ranch or a different bull comes to mind later.

The cows:
I would first I would go back a few years and pick through Cliff Hougans herd at the original Bootjack Ranch, MT and take a 1/3rd from them. Then I would pick out a 1/3rd of the stouter higher performing cows from Milk Creek Red Angus,MT and last I would take the smaller thicker cows at OHR Ranch, ND.

The semen:
I would also use Rambo 502 (used very carefully) Dakota Copper 29K, and maybe Grand Canyon when mated correctly. These would get me the maternal cow base needed, and I would later use some semen on 121R or a son to keep the power and musle alive.

SEC - I would use Rambo very carefully, and he would be a hard decision, there were a couple older bulls that I thought about also. I think his semen is nearly extinct down here and what there is you can't buy often.

Doc Harris - I think you misread, I would buy from GDAR (Gartner - Denowh), not Gardiner, they aren't my type of cattle at all.

I don't know if I've ever seen 30 cows I like on one ranch in my life. I've never had 30 faultless cows. Interesting discussion. I'll have to think on it .

SEC - I just about said Red Geis Prime Rib, and a Pioneer Bred Bull, I have a lot of grand daughters and great grand daughters of Rambo and have had great look with them, but I have seen a few Rambo's that I wasn't thrilled with.

BRG - The old Bootjack would have been my number one choice if they were around. Good cattle!
