These are the top 20 Hereford AI sires from the 2009 calf crop. I thought that it may interest some of you. I got this from Jack Ward after asking about it from a past Hereford World article.

Don't know if that is # of progeny or number of registered progeny. The article you are referring to said "registrations", I believe.

"The 2009 top 20 sire list by registration is really interesting to look through." Jack Ward

What's interesting?

13 "P" sires, 7 "H" sires.
2038 vs. 1227 "P" vs "H" registrations.
These 20 bulls are right at 5% of total registrations for the year.
There are more bulls that "never stepped on the tanbark" than bulls that did.
I was surprized to only see a single HH prefix among them and no CL1 prefixes.
The top Angus bull for 2009 did more registrations than all 20 of these bulls combined. The top bull usually is around 10,000 registrations (perspective!). These 20 bulls combined would probably be lucky to make the "top 10" Angus list.
The median age of these sires was 4 when the calves were conceived (2 yearlings on the list and the oldest a 12 year old). I'd guess that if you compared it to Angus, the median bull would be a good deal older there than here.

Being the devils advocate, maybe Hereford breeders make better use of the knife and selecting heifers to register.

Unfortunaley the costs of AIing for reg herefords is a still too expensive for alot of breeders. The non cert program is helping though. The sad part is if of the four bulls I have I will probably never use two of them again.

I think it's interesting how many of the most used bulls are ABS sires. I expect there'll be even more of the semen company's bulls in the top 20 in the coming years, especially if the "elite breeders" continue to try to protect their investment rather than compete.

George

Some people need to realize that the $60 semen + $100 certificate days are over.

The semen companies will force this change on Herefords whether the "Good Old Boys" like it or not. They may have good cattle but the semen companies will buy from places where they can set the prices themselves. At that level it's all about promotion anyways.

I question your H vs. P number's accuracy, as most of those polled bulls are heterozygous polled. I guess you could break down the numbers by looking at each sire individually and then adding them up.

If all companies did as crappy a job of marketing their bulls as Genex did of mine I'd be amazed any got sold. I must of gotten a dozen e-mails of guys wanting to use Lad but their rep dragging his feet trying to pimp some Angus to him. I can't wait to get my inventory bought back from them and get him working on commercial Angus cows. Guess maybe I should of sold him to Schaff's lol.

There have been some real disappointments from people who leased or sold a bull to AI studs.

It would be easier to take if the bull wasn't useful and nobody wanted him-I had a friend in Minnesota watch a rep pretty much refuse to get in 80 units for his customer-glad to be done with those deadbeats in all capacities.

I asked the question and found that this is what the industry leader did:

For fiscal year 2009:
212 sires with 100 or more registrations.
Top sire had 9118 registrations
The top Hereford bull would have placed 69th on the list.
......and an OLD bull named EXT was #31 on the list with 933 registrations (more than double the top Herf).

It might be fun if someone wants to do this exercise for some of the other breeds........

Frankie! Are you back? The post was simply stating the top 20 Hereford AI sires, not "how much more popular are angus?"

Alan
