too late for rye?

I was driving into town and saw a friend in his pasture spreading something. I stopped and took a gander and asked what he was spreading or fertilizing. He was putting out annual gulf rye. We are in Central Texas and our average temps are 36 to 54. It seems a little late to me. So what do you think?

It is late to get the full value out of it. He will get a little grazing before it goes back due to the heat.

I think he's right on time with the way the weather has been the past few years.
