Toning down the BR % in BR composite breeds

Most of the brahman composite breeds carry 3/8 (or 37.5%) BR, most think this is a bit too much for ideal carcass quality, takes dock at many sale barns, etc

Therefore, folks are toning down the BR influence by crossing the BR derivative breed back to it's bos taurus (BT) parent breed. For example, "Ultrablack" or "Angus plus" by crossing the 3/8 Brangus with Angus for a 3/16 (or 18.75%) BR animal. However, a 3/16 BR animal just doesn't have nearly the needed amount of hardiness/heat tolerance that most cattlefolks need in warm climates.

I think I read somewhere that a minimum of 1/4 BR is needed in the momma cow for hardiness and calf growth regulation.

So, why not dail in new moderate % for a happy middle ground? This could easily be done (& with fairly consistent phenotype) by taking the first cross of 3/8 BR & 100% BT (ex: Ultrablack) and crossing it back to the 3/8 blood (ex:Brangus). This would produce an animal that would be 28% BR.

Could be done with Brangus, Braford, Simbrah, Gert, etc. But perhaps the AAA needs to kick it off and give it a name!

Any of ya'll already dialing up this sort of BR percentage in your herds??

I think you are going to see more of the American breeds (Brangus, Beefmaster , Santa Gertrudis, Braford, etc) do more carcass work and identify family lines that have the desirable carcass characteristics. These breeds have cattle now that can produce choice beef, just not enough of them.

sadly because they were focused on every thing, around the carcass.....

@ Ala- are you doing it the same way? i.e. low % bull (like "ultrablack") over 3/8 cows?

I hope to do this too... but doing it the backasswards way only b/c I already have angus cows... by putting a 3/8 bull over straight angus cows for a couple of generations in order to ultimately have 28% BR cows.

by using what i use to call short and dumpy, that were actually smaller framed with capacity :lol2: angus bulls, on commercial brangus that percentages vary... but its cleaning them up... and hanging more meat on their bones

Mostly Beefmaster mommas...Had a BM bull, but took him to the sale barn and now have a Simbrah (75/25) on them. First calves to start hitting the ground mid Jan. Have another purebred Simbrah bull on some BM's.

Have several purebred Simbrah mommas that are bred to a 75/25 Simbrah and Simmental.

I really like the Simbrah and and the look of the 75/25. Trying to get the herd to that mix over time with home raised calves and buying a few here and there.
