I am sure many of you , when you attend sales, notice that sometimes animals are rejected by the sale, and if the critter is bad off, sometimes the owner or hauler will toss the animal into the 'dead' pen for the knacker to pick up, or I have also seen them either just let them go, or toss them in the back of auctions to be rid of them.

Last weds. I was leaving with my few purchases, and saw this poor little calf that was tossed off to the outside the sale barn, and upon inspection, saw the reason why....it was taking it's last breath's, and squirtin yellow like it was paint..............but I got a soft heart. So I did the stupid thing, and picked it up, and brought it home, and put it in our 'sick' hutch away from everything else.

Well, a bit of TLC and some rightous meds and support therapy, and that little bugger was up the next day eating, and today is crying for more after each feeding.

Just goes to show ya, don't give up until the last breath is taken sometimes. That calf, if it lives, should make good profit for this place. :cboy:

Good for you. I hope he does well for you and you're rewarded financially for your soft heart. I would expect that just seeing the little bugger up and around makes you feel pretty good, even if you don't make a cent on him.

medic so glad you picked that calf up.thats 1 calf that should of been left at the house.an not dumped at the sale barn.so glad its doing ok for you after you doctored it.its a free calf.all you can loose are milk an meds put into it.scott

Awwwww.. a SOFTIE after all! I think it's a great thing you did, and I hope the calf does great and you make a fortune! :D

That must be a local thing.. I've never been to an auction that had a "dead pen".. thank GOD! That's awful..

i have never seen a 'dead pen" neither...that kinda creeps me out...
that was really sweet, and kind hearted to save that little thang. i am glad there folks out there that have big hearts  good luck

There is a man from Comanche that made a fortune off those situations. I heard of calves being drug onto his trailer and in a few months back at the sale.

Good for you Medic. Nothing wrong with a soft heart now and then. I hope it pays off for you.
The sale barns around here haven't got a "dead pen". If it can't walk in on it's own, it stays on the trailers/trucks.
Although I have seen several calves as you have described, sickly, poor looking and on their last legs, put into pens off to themselves....and haven't seen them come through the sale.

You Think?...Hang on, let me ask my Wife if it's OK for you and me to have supper together. (Pause) She said it would be fine, but just as long as I dont come back.

I've never seen a "dead pen" at our auction either, unless it's hid off way in the back or something. There was a sign posted for a while after the mad cow episode that is an animal was not mobile oe severly emancipated it could not be off loaded on acution barn premises. I noticed that this sign was not there anymore this weekend though.

So if there's a calf in the dead pen you can pick it up for free?

You make the rest of us proud....I can't say that that is something that I would have done if I was by myself...another reason why I avoid taking Susie with me to the sale...she has a heart like yours....perhaps I need to rethink my position.
Good luck with the calf....is his name Lucky? DMc
