I've gotten tons of great advice on this board including some that led to the purchase of a great bull we really like so ill throw out this and see what opinions I get.... Im in South East Texas and going to be putting a polled Hereford bull on Santa Gertrudis and Gert cross cows. I have three Gert Cross cows right now bred to him, will calve this spring but buying some more cows now and probably going with Gerts. Thoughts on these calves both steers and heifers to sell?

I knew some people quite a few years ago with Hereford x Gert cows. They were really good cows. I think you will do well with them, but don't turn your nose up at Brangus cows to put with that Hereford bull if you run across some.

Nothing wrong with it, if you end up running all Gerts your next bull might need to be a Charolais, that's my favorite cross for Gerts. But I would keep the Hereford and the cows you have, then when you buy more find some good brangus cows.

Brangus cows.
With the Hereford over Gerts your making a Beefmaster type cow.
Nothing wrong with the cross the Brangus will sell better.
A Char cow with that bull is good selling cross as well here.
I still prefer a red cow with all said and done.
Don't turn your nose up if you come across some Shorthorn, neighbor gets some mighty fine calves.

Yep those look like my neighbors.
I haven't really had any dealing with SH until I bought that heifer off him.
Been watching his cattle for the last couple of years they raise a heck of a calf.
I have been impressed watching his calf's grow.

I might have to give those ladies another look then. Price seems right doesn't it? I just like red cattle. I will most likely never buy Brangus cows even tho they probably sell better. No real reason just me.

For a commercial guy quality cows mean more than color. Don't close the door on some good brangus cows when you own a Hereford bull. Learn to buy good cows no matter what color they are.

This thread is old but now that I've had the calves out of my Gert Cross cows and the Hereford bull I wanted to update and say they are the best calves we've had here. Really good looking suckers, not wild at all like all our calves were out of our Brahama bull. I just bought some PB Gert Heifers to add to the herd and in the last two months bought a couple Beefmaster, Beefmaster Cross and Charolais cross cows so we'll get a good idea of which direction we want to go after next calving season to see how the Polled Hereford crosses on all the new cows.

Hereford and Gert Crosses make awesome heifers. My grandfather used to run this cross and always had success. he always folled them up with a brangus or braford bull and I think he had some cows in his herd that were working till they were almost 20.

Your grandpa was making a basterd Beefmasters.
Had his percentages messed up.

What is a basterd beefmaster?

If he had his percentages messed up why does it matter? The question wasnt about beefmasters it was about hereford and gert cross cattle.

That is the three breeds that make beefmaster Brahman, Hereford and Shorthorn.
Gerts are Brahman x Shorthorn and you are crossing back to Herefords.
Lasiter perfected that cross about 80 years ago. The answer is you are trying to reinvent the wheel.

So a Star 5 Heifer Gert cow with my Hereford bull on her, is just a Beefmaster? Why is there a Star 5 registry then? Im just curious. Im not trying to reinvent anything. Personally I think Gerts and Beefmasters were invented here for a reason. Use em.

Really it is not a Beefmaster just has the three breeds that make one.
Not to hurt you feeling it is just a crossbred cow.
It is worth only what you can get for it at the sale barn just like any other.

Caustic you cant hurt my feelings, I love to learn. I lay awake at night trying to figure out what to buy, what to cull, when to cull it and when to buy! At the end of the day I want to keep the bull you turned me on to and I want cows that will produce heifers that are marketable as replacements and steers that will bring a decent price. I love Beefmaster cows and the Beefmaster breeders I've met. I own one reg. BM so far. I have always loved the Gerts and just bought two Reg. Gerts. Everything else is a Gert or BM cross of god knows what but they do well for me.

On that note buy what you like and stay the course and cull and cull to you get what you want.
It is cheaper to keep a good cow. There is no perfect cow.
