Just wondering if you could comment on my bulls likes and dislikes.

05 is a 2 yr old shorthorn bull purchased from a local stud (zenith) for $2000. He has not been grain fed just grown up on native pastures. He has the lowest birth weight out of the 4 bulls that we own so we joined him to the younger first time calvers.

064 was purchased for the same price as 05 and the same stud. His father was a white shorthorn so hopefully he will produce roan shorthorns for us. Both 2 yr bull are growing fast.

Ronald is a 6 yr old hereford bull he has produced some very good heifer which we have kept. He was a poddy calf that we raised.

All 3 look like good sound commercial bulls. I'm assuming you have only just used the shorthorns? What's your cow base?

We used all 3 bulls and another shorthorn bull.

We purchased some new hereford cows, shorthorn heifers, and shorthorn x hereford cows, we are aiming to cross these together.
A few years ago we started our small family herd which was herefords, shorthorns and angus.

Some of the white shorthorn 2nd calver's with calves at foot by the hereford bull (Ronald)

One of the older shorthorn x hereford cows with calves at foot by a unknown hereford bull.

Those are some good looking cows and i like the bull too! I would love to get some cows from this cross, particularly the hereford x shorthorns and put a terminal bull over them.
What's your main market for the calves?

Yeah we like how they come our in roans. We grow the calves up and sell them at 2 yrs old steers that is. We will keep the shorthorn x hereford heifers to breed with.

I think that you did not progress with the two young bulls. Your cowherd is better than either one of them!

I would not keep any replacements out of the heifer bull for sure.

Generally they will like cows in heat the most, followed by lush green grass, and grain.

Dislikes will include other bulls, sharp objects that go undetected sticking 12-18 inches out of the ground, and most of all fences.

Just a joke. Had nothing whatsoever to do with his bull. I think the bulls are just fine.

lol it's fine i thought it was a bit funny.

The solid red shorthorn you posted in a previous post is considerably better than these younger bulls. I would use the heck out of the older bull. Notice how much cleaner in the throat and more level in his hip he is than these 2 younger shorty bulls.

Yeah we think he's a good one. We have to limit his use to some cows as he is over 1000kg and has already injured a cows. (she has improved since joined)
We are hoping that the 2 younger bulls will grow which they defs have since we bought them.

Re Dislikes, how about dogs, horses and or Cowboys that try and take them away from cows in heat, Longhorns to compete with at breeding might rank up there also. :cboy:
