The last couple of bales we put out in mid to late March have sat untouched until just recently. For some reason known only to the bovine mind, the girls have eaten about 3/4 of those bales......while standing knee deep in green bermuda grass. I guess after 7 months of grass they just wanted a change. Reminds me of putting out old half rotted bales for erosion control only to have the cows eat it.

They like a bit of roughage with the green stuff... When I change pastures into lush stuff, when possible I still give them access to their old pasture of sticks to browse on

We just weaned the spring calves 9 days ago, put them in a pasture with tons of lush grass. And yet we see them nibbling on last years mulch pile, which is primarily straw & residual stemmy bales mixed with mud, probably some eroded poo. They seem to know when they need roughage because they ones eating it have totally clean behinds :)

those bales finally cured out to the point the cows wanted to eat them.we bought some 3yr old netwrapped fert hay recently and our cows was eating them slow till they got used to them.put our hay out and they will clean the ring up.

My cows will eat everything in the pasture before they'll eat the Bermuda.

Same here. Makes me wonder why I tried so hard to establish a stand.
