on my neighbors new house yesterday. I wasn't thrilled when they changed their minds and decided to build on this side of the road rather on the other side where they had planned on building. One of the reasons we bought this place was the view to the west. We sit on top of a hill and about 3/4 of a mile away is a massive grove one OLD native pecan trees.

I haven't been in the house but it looks like it's about a million sq. ft. with more angles and gables then you can throw rocks at. He had said that they were going to put a shingled roof on it. Ain't happening... Tin roof and one of the big sections is looking right at me. I can't wait till summer.Z

I really don't understand the "huge house" phenomenon. You don't need a lot of room to be comfortable. Why build and maintain more than you need. I know of a single woman who built 9000 sq ft. Just because she could, I guess.
Around here, vanity houses have terrible resale. Who wants to pay a million for someone elses dream house.

I was actually going to build a new house down on the farm. The one we live in is huge and it takes a lot of electricity to cool it in our summers. I was thinking of buidling something about 2400 square foot or so. Then the boss lady started looking at my plans. Seems she wants a house for the kids to come home to over the holidays. Anyway, once she got done having me redraft it, the doggone thing was as big as the house we have now.

We have reached a compromise, but I have to build a little guest cottage just beyond the house.

MillIron, if I were to acquire 2000 acres and put a house slap dab in the middle, some fool would develop the place south of me. Then they'd come along with another highway through the middle of my place or else the county would want to put yet another country road through me. They just love that eminent domain power trip thing.

Land came up for sale adjacent to my current property and I thought they were asking too many nickels for it, so I passed on it. Then I got a neighbor from the city who wants to live in the country, but doesn't accept the country ways. She's got 11 dogs and thinks we all love them. Her spectacular "view" is of my place. So when a piece came up for sale the adjoins me on the other side, I immediately bought it. Then they put three acres up for sale south of that place and I bought it too. Good thing about it is I got the mineral rights and they are worth a whole bunch of nickels around here now.

They also have a "little place down on the coast" complete with a 42' cabin cruiser and a couple of other boats. They coverted their barn into living quarters for their daughter and her monsters and built a new 150' long barn/hay/equipment shed.Z

You got to fake that insanity stuff regularly around them folks. You know unload every gun in the house on a wasp nest or something. Talk to yourself regularly, and be sure you argue just a bit with your other personality anytime your are around them. Then you won't have to worry about their daughter's monsters any. They'll be too scared of ya.

I don't like a big house. I think for the most part it is just people showing off.

I like a one story small house (all nice and cozy).

Naw. But I wish I were. I know men like him. I was raised by men like him and they made me choose a different life. I came back. That's how I got even

Wow, I didn't know our neighbour's had a house in Texas!
She built the land across the road allowance and had ample room to set it back a bit from the road but no she put it as close to the road as the MD would allow. We are back but can not miss the large blue house. Blue/Gray siding with a huge bright blue tin roof. It is also huge (single lady). She has a gazillion lights on it that she leaves on morning, noon and night. It looks like we live next to an airport. We call it the Smurf house. Oh well, she probably complains about us too. She probably feels that our small bungalow makes the neighbourhood look to poor. ;-)

Why are city folks who move to the country so afraid of the dark? Every cotton picking one of them I see has to have their place lit up like the city jail on Saturday night. I HATE all the light pollution.

First thing I do when there is a widespread power outage is run outside and look at the sky if it is night time. The stars all glow just like they did when you were a kid.

That is one of my least favourite changes too. When I was a kid you couldn't see your hand in front of your face outside on a moonless night, but we could see the Northern Lights sometimes. Now the towns and cities to the north of us have grown so much that it is fairly light out at night and no more Northern Lights. :(

On the coldest clearest night of the year you can't see a hundred stars where we are. I hope that before I get to old to do it I can take my wife and pack back into the devide country of southern Colorado. She has never lived where there wasn't refracted light at night.Z

I'm with you Texas Gal. Now most of the country people are just about as bad. Think they have to have one of those booger lights that comes on automatically and stays on all night, every night.

Another thing I have never been able to understand is why people have to run up and down the roads with those noise machines blaring from their vehicles.

If I were goin to have any type security light it would be a motion detector type set on top of the house and not on the side and I for dern sure don't want something out a hunderd feet away lighting up the house and the windows and doors. I want to be in the dark and take the darkness away from the enemy.Z

My thoughts exactly. I want them to worry about where I am and what I got.
