The Wild Cattle of Chillingham

Help Support CattleToday:

It's always interesting to see wild or feral cattle that have survived on their own for years.

I could not find anything about managing their numbers, other than:

These cattle have a rather unusual status, being of a husbanded species but living as a wild animal. As being of the bovine species, they would be culled if they contracted foot-and-mouth disease. Special considerations apply to health monitoring and maintenance of biosecurity is a matter of the highest priority.

The last time anybody dared to treat the Wild White Cattle as fair game was in October, 1872, when the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) visited Chillingham Estate and decided to give chase. A "shoot" was duly arranged by the keepers.

From what I read on several sites, apparently these wild cattle are not big. Cows are only 600lbs when fully grown.

The idea of breeding back the aurochs was first proposed in the 19th century by Feliks Paweł Jarocki. In the 1920s, a first attempt was undertaken by the Heck brothers in Germany with the aim of breeding an effigy (a look-alike) of the aurochs. Starting in the 1990s grazing and rewilding projects brought new impetus to the idea and new breeding-back efforts came underway, this time with the aim of recreating an animal not only with the looks, but also with the behaviour and the ecological impact of the aurochs, to be able to fill the ecological role of the aurochs.

The Nazis got involved as some point in the breed back efforts, but seem to have been left out recent publications...

I don't see value of increasing the number of cattle with poor dispositions, but I would like to see a mastodon. One scientific theory is more mastodons will reduce global warming.
