Church was canceled today for both morning and afternoon services. It was too cold outside to do anything beyond the essentials, so I went to the matinee and saw The Revenant. The previews did a pretty good job of showing everything in the movie worth seeing. It wasn't a bad movie, just not as good as I was expecting.

It is a lot of staring. Staring at the sky, rocks, trees, water.
You can watch the first 1/2 hour, sleep for the next hour and half and watch the last 1/2 hour and not miss a thing.

They took a lot of literary license with the story. A lot of beautiful country but most of it doesn't look anything like area where it really happened. The movie looked like this happened in the winter not August in South Dakota. The wife didn't like the language or the gore. It was an ok movie but certainly not a classic.
Wow! These reviews sadden me. I was REALLY looking forward to seeing it. Now I will just wait until it's on demand or Netflix. How disappointing. First, I was let down by QTs Hateful 8, and now the disappointing reviews for Revenant. Hollywood is overdue for a good movie.

It was worth seeing, it just didn't meet the expectation I had for the movie. It's definatly a movie that is better enjoyed on the big screen. The cinematography was pretty good. They were in some virgin timber somewhere.

Those parts shot in the timber look to me to be Northern California or Oregon coast based on the tree and brush species. There were a few shots I remember thinking they were the Canadian Rockies. And I wonder how they made that bear scene look so realistic without getting someone killed.

First movie the new bride and I have gone to together. It was a spur of the moment idea. I didn't mind the cost of the movie. But the concession stand prices were ridiculous. It was $5.50 for a small soda and $6.75 for a small popcorn. We passed on that and ate a smack when we got home.
Yup, for me it's just not worth the time and expense, unless friends who know me say it's a must see in theaters........ Their only wrong half the time. :lol: I wait until Netflix, do it in blue ray on a 50" HD in the recliner and I'm happy, if I like it I can watch it again at no charge.
Majority of the movie was shot outside Calgary.

I have not seen this movie yet but the previews remind of another movie, with a similar plot, by the name "man in the wilderness" staring Richard Harris. That was a very good movie.
