5 pages of posts so far on the "good grief topic" and some really good information. It's been said the only stupid question is the one you don't ask. Some may be a little more juvenile than others but ask anyway, soon, hopefully you will be the one who can answer the next "stupid question". When I was a baby I wore diapers but grew out of that phase and intend to grow out of being a newbie at this cow thing. It's called a beginner board and viewed by ones wanting to learn. Thanks to all. Caustic, I enjoy your posts.

Thank you. Well put.

I am one of those hobby farmers, but that is what I can do right now given the amount of land I have. Short of winning the lottery, I don't see myself going into any kind of full scale operation any time soon. I don't see how anyone can do this for a living and everyone here who does has my great respect. My family's background is in farming and ranching, I grew up around it and enjoyed it. I see my uncle, for one, struggle every year, and not just with the financial end, he does okay, but I know he works seven days a week and it has taken a toll on his health over the years. All I want to do is to show my son some responsibility and put some meat in the freezer. I also like to see the animals grow up, especially this time of year.

I'll bet that if the internet were around 50 years ago, folks like my dad and uncles would have posted some stupid questions, too.

I agree stupid questions need to be asked, none of us know anything. Have a look at the stuff I ask on the Show Board. I've been around cows all my life but this showing thing is new to me so I come here to ask people who've been around showing and no what they are doing. I like the fact that if they laugh at me they do it quietly. ;-) There's some great people over on that board.
Some questions though do need to be answered BEFORE a person buys cows. If they want to come here to ask them that's great but knowing a basic health and feeding program is essential. Cattle are not toys to be picked up because they seem cool to have. They are not plants where if they die because a person can't take care of them properly it isn't a big deal. They are living creatures. We eat them but they deserve respect and to have us take care of them while they are alive and to die humanely. Some stupid questions can be saved for later after the cows are bought but some for the sake of the cows and the industry need to be answered ahead of time.
That said, I like newbies who like their cows and take care of them. I like the excitement that is shown over the first calf ever born or the cow they helped.

Well said Victoria. Couldn't have said it better. I work hard and take pride in my animals. Like I've said before while there at my farm there have a great home.

You've got some nice looking cows that look like they do a great job on those calves!
We're like you, we give our cows a good place to live, if they treat us right they don't leave here alive.
