OK, I finally got some good pictures.. yesterday was a gorgeous day.. so I took advantage of it

Here's Mega's daughter Tera.. she's a little shy around the manger and it shows.. she isn't eating as well as she should


Here's Tera's 7/8th sister Katima... she gladly eats anything... and it shows.. she's really nice because of it


The June calf from Alma.. (Alma is Katima's grandmother).. she is looking pretty good, and she may yet make a replacement heifer


Coming 2nd calver Kama.. Rosie's last daughter.. she looks like she grew a lot since september when I weaned her calf, and gained a lot of condition too.. I'm happy for that


Kama's full sister Cenci.. REALLY hoping she makes a heifer!.. she raised the steer I was hoping would go to 4H last year.. he was in the top 1% for beauty, and darned heavy too


Mega's coming 2nd calver daughter Sofa with Timo the bull... I don't know why Sofa doesn't grow.. she was big at weaning and just quit when she was a yearling (Fed the same as Kama)... she's a real 'mini' cow.. except for her huge belly... I'll see how she does this year
 
Here's Marko, the coming 2 year old bull from Caddy and full brother to Chroma.. hasn't had any special attention, grain, or anything.. I think he looks decent.. Kama, Sofa, Alma, and about 5 others are bred by him, so I'll see how his calves look this spring... I am kinda excited to see that... He should have good birthweights which Timo fails at, so I may get rid of Timo after this breeding season if Marko's calves look good enough.

And Chroma.. she raised the biggest steer of all the cows last year, about 620 lbs at 170 days.. pretty darned good for a smallish 4 year old.. She is also bred to her full brother...


And here's Tifa.. Chroma's linebred daughter from 2014... I don't think she'll be a big cow.. I don't expect her to have a big calf next spring.. she's bred to Marko, who is very related to her, so there's certainly no hybrid vigor,.. but I think it could be a very nicely built animal.. time will tell, but I hate waiting!!
 
And some scenery pics.. from yesterday of course... We got about 5" of snow.. it was pretty light stuff.. we need the humidity so I don't mind.. the cows grazed until new years, which is a record breaker for us, especially with more cows than we used to have







 
Wow that is a big change in a day. I love looking at your pictures just beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
Cattle look good as well just hard to concentrate on the cow when looking at those beautiful mountains.

Looking good. Beautiful scenery and great pictures. Thanks for sharing. You can keep the snow. I would hate to check cows in snow. Seeing it in pictures is enough for me.
 
Very nice pictures! The scenery is beautiful. Cows look good as well. The replacements look alright, but I think (just my opinion - not that it counts for much) that maybe your Gelbvieh sired replacements looked a little better? These look a little leggy in comparison.
 
Grit.. so which would you cull? I culled 5 in the fall, I need to raise some replacements before I do more

Creekdrive, you're totally right, the Limo sired replacements are definitely more leggy than the Gelbvieh... I'll see how they turn out

I think the snow is up to 6-8" now... Might even break out the snowplow while its nice and fluffy stuff
 
Nesi, it could just be the pictures and your description. I really liked your calf pictures from a few years ago, the calves looked deep and thick. Hopefully this home grown bull will produce some really good calves. But I have my doubts there also. A cross bred bull on cross bred cows leaves a lot to the imagination. IMO But I'm happy with a live calf, so I have no room to talk.

While he may not keep as many out of the closely need animals, the best ones should be really good.

I've always had more important things to cull so far.. the 5 cows I shipped in the fall had to go, 3 for prolapses and 2 for repeated poor performances. Apparently I gotta get rid of everything short and everything tall too? The one replacement heifer I didn't post a picture of is a shorthorn Limo... she is taller than most as well, looks pretty good, but is a freak, and I just found she's still looking at teats... she's been weaned 4 months so she might be a perpetual offender... she may need to go.
 
I like those pictures you post Nesikep. It is beautiful up there. The scenery is so different than it is around my home. If it snowed that much at one time in South Carolina, the whole state would shut down :lol2: . I hope your bull works for you,he looks OK from here. He is a full sib to one of your main cows? I think it will be interesting to see his calves.
