Property taxes as a percent of home value has Wisconsin now holding the #1 spot....

Texas doesn't have a state income tax. They've got to get money from somewhere.....

Well that hurts... we have Income Tax also.

What really burns me is for the retired generation.... so many of fixed income retirees are unable to stay living in their home because our property taxes are so dang high here.

I just wish I was smart enough to provide a solution.... instead of simmer about it.

Property taxes are paid to the county not the state. The state gets its revenue from sales tax. If you don't buy you don't pay.
Food is not taxed.

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change.
I always thought NY was the highest taxed state. Property taxes here go to Schools, Towns, and counties. The kicker is the state mandates programs that are funded by these taxes.

What % sales tax?

8.25 %

Wow! IN is at 6%. But we have an income tax. And burdensome property tax. Our current plan is to sell off assets.

My wife heard on tv today a hamburger cost $12.00 and a bottle of water $5.00 in the Bahamas. Maybe we better pay our taxes and stay in the US.

We leased a toll road to an Austrailian-Spanish company. $75 billion, up front. 75 yr lease. We are seeking bidders on the state lottery (calling Tony Soprano).
I hear that naming rights for I-65 have attracted the attention of a farm supply mogul in Tennessee. The Crowder Supply Highway will soon run from Michigan to Mobile.
But heck, I see Texas is about to sell its electric business to an investment group. Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts. The same group which looted RJ Reynolds Tobacco in the 1980's. I'd feel really comfortable with that.

Man alive...alll I wanna do is move to the Bahamas. I'll cook my own burgers...but the bottled water, now that is necessary in the Bahamas. Maybe I'll try further south or east or somewhere...where's Tahiti in relation to the Bahamas?

Doesn't that vary from one municipality to another, depending on what they tack on to pay for stadiums and the like?

Actually, from the State Comptroller's office:
http://www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/local/index.html

The Texas state sales and use tax rate is 6.25%, but local taxing jurisdictions (cities, counties, special purpose districts, and transit authorities) may also impose sales and use tax up to 2% for a total maximum combined rate of 8.25%.

Most of local taxing jurisdictions charge the max.
