Just walked through the stand of Orchard grass / Timothy that we planted last fall. It has been the perfect fall - winter - spring for establishing a grass stand. It was extremely dry last summer and we worked the ground all August to level it up and to kill the fescue. Next we applyed 3 tons of lime per acre and a blend of fertilizer. The orchard grass and timothy was drilled into dust right before it began to get several small showers through September. After a mild winter in which the grass never went completely dormant we put on 90 lbs. of actual N in March. The hay is extremely thick and though it looks like a field of mustard from the road there is actually very little mustard or other broadleaves present. We intend to be cutting the hay in the middle of May at this rate. Our main objective is to see if we can crowd out the broadleaves and eradicate them through multiple cutting this year. My brothers have to combat broadleaves through spraying because when they should be cutting hay they are planting row crops. I do know that there may be an abundance of hay in this area because of how good the hay looks and a lot of our herds in this area have either been sold or called heavily.
