My water temp gage went south. How do I tell if it's the gage
or the sender? It's on a 2600 ford tractor
I'm going to start making biodesiel and need to see what
changes.

I can't remember but it seems like the 2600 had an electric sending unit as opposed to a mechanical unit. A mechanical unit uses a thermo couple to drive the guage. At any rate, the sending unit is cheap to try. What I did on my 3500 was just to go to a auto store and buy one for a car and replaced the whole thing. It included the sending unit and guage. If you don't get the guage or sending unit from the dealer for that tractor the impedance will not match and you will get incorrect readings. If it is the guage it will be MUCH cheaper just to replace with one from a auto parts store.

If its electric pull the wire off the sending unit, with the ignition on and simply ground the wire to the block. If the gauge goes all the way to the hot side then your guage is working. so replace the sending unit. For the thermostat type guage pull it from the engine and put a ciggerette lighter to it. it should show it heating up.
