Tater bugs eating tomatoe plants

I had 16 nice Rutger tomatoe plants. They survived a late cold spell and alot of rain, but now the tater bugs are eating them up. I have never had hard shell tater bugs bother tomatoes. Has anyone else had this problem?

What are you calling a tater bug? Is it the same as a stink bug?
