We have been thinking about getting a hay chopper, for feed efficiency, but know VERY little about them. Tarrup Kidd is a UK manufacturer (before that, they were Kvernland). Please see this following link; then you have to follow it clear down to the bottom of the page to get to the information on the #800. Please LMK your thoughts. Thanks!

That's just like our old hay grinder/straw thrower that we had, only ours was a much larger version (and American-made) for our large round bales. The thing I don't like about these shredders (and this is just opinion) is that you would get more waste than if you were to feed the bales in a bale feeder, especially if you overestimate and put too much hay out at once. You won't have that problem if hay is fed in a feeder.

Our bale processor is my best friend ,besides the skid steer , in winter. Use it all the time to shred straw for bedding ,during calving it get used just about everyday . That is how you calve in winter here, tons of fresh bedding on a very deep straw pack.

Only use it for hay when I have a really crappy bale that has frozen and thawed alot of times and the cattle are not able to break it up themselves.

So, I think what you might be telling me is, this isn't exactly what we should be looking for, as it's more of a bedding shredder than a "food processor" and not easy to get the end product into a bunk feeder or similar ?? Be honest; I need to know! Thx!

That's certainly what it looks like, from studying the photos. You need some sort of feed grinder or bale processor, not something to spread hay/straw with.

You may need something like this:

More can be found here:

Thx! Obviously, I need to do more research. But am passing on this Kidd unit, although I've passed this CT thread along to the seller, who had totally no idea what that piece of equipment left by the previous land-owner used it for.

I know some used machines simular for bedding strawberries, not used one, I used a Teagle and round bales for that job and that was a machine that needed scrapping even when brand new. When trying to bed cow it took over 20 minutes to chop a 4 by 4 round bale :bang: :bang:

A machine like this http://www.highline.jbeck.ca/en/agricultural/cfr650 will chop a couple of #1400 bale in about 1 1/2 minutes, with practice you can chop hay or silage into a bunk.

Your welcome. That bale processor is actually something similar to what we had a number of years ago. Great to use, but it got a bit costly to run the tractor every day, especially with fuel prices. Plus we were just going into making silage, so we didn't need it anymore. I think you'll find this machine quite useful for what you're looking for for your operation. :)
