do any of you use float valves for your water tanks? what type of floats do you use? a couple years ago I started using large laundry detergent containers filled with expanding foam.

I prefer aluminum pancake or donut floats on Watson valves because they are easily adjustable from the surface.

Your homemade floats sound durable and cheap, as long as they are protected from sun and animals.

mine are definetly cheap. just a cooper wire between the ball/float valve and the handle on the jug. most of the tanks I use are 300 gallon or larger - the float is completely exposed. the only problem I had with them was occasionally slicing the float with an axe when chopping ice...but the spray foam insulation inside them takes care of that problem.
