We just bred our cows via AI and we were running a bit late this season. I am going to put them with the clean up bull before next cycle. Our idea was to use a tail marking paint - if a cow isn't ridden she must have settled with the AI- right?
Can anyone point out the flaws in my plan? (and I know there must be flaws in my plan).

I don;t see any flaws other then the stuff will dry up and flake off over time. Better to wait for a couple of weeks after you AI them to paint them.
Tail head paint has been used for many years, long before K-Mars or any of the newer things came along.

dun - can you give me some tips on the correct way to apply tail paint? I know what the instructions say but often veteran has useful insight.

We never have used anything that is specifically termed "tail paint". We always just used those big old greasey paint sticks.

Estrus Alerts work great and the wont come off unless you pull them.

I agree with Areo. The product formerly known as Estrus Alert (now called Estrotect, but thats another story) work the best of any of the heat detection aides out there. There is no messy glue, no drying out and flaking off, only the occassional one that gets rode off.
 
We have used Estrus Alerts, Kamars, Paint markers, and Mount Count. Best we have seen is Kamar. We still use the Mount Count from time to time. We have one cow who can pull an Estrus Alert off faster than you can blink an eye. We use extra glue when we are putting them on her.

worse than pulling them off is when they scratch them up under low branchs. throws the timing all off.
 
Back at work what they would do is have a sterile bull out in the pasture and he had this halter like thing with a big ball underneath that they would fill with some green paint. When a cow would have green all over her back, it was time to AI.

You could probably do that, and when a cow had green all over her, you would know the bull was after her.

With chin ball markers you have all of the problems that come from running a bull with none of the advantages

OK the paint was a miserable failure - saw some cows breed and never moved the tail paint. Oh well you guys were right should have used a different method.
But on the up side the cows all have a good looking flourescent green tail head!

I have always just used spray paint over the tail head and pins. Cheap, easy to see, and rubs off when the cow has been ridden. We also just spend alot of time watching in early morning and late evening.
