I know a lot of you folks prefer to use the disposable syringes, use once or twice, and chuck 'em. I use those disposable types too.

But, I know a certain someone who likes to use those syringe "guns"...automatic, precision, repeaters, etc, whatever they're called... for vaccinating during spring roundup. They look like this:

This certain someone could use another syringe like what they already have.... for those of you who have used them, are there any particular styles/brands you prefer?
Thanks-

Milkmaid, we've got two of the stainless steel guns with the adjustable dosages - one has a plastic barrel (doesn't work so well) and one has a glass barrel (works much better). The only reference to a brand name I can find on the one with a glass barrel are the letters APES on the stationary part of the trigger. We have had this syringe for quite a number of years and it has always performed very well.

We have 4 of the guns that MSSCAMP is referring too. 2 with plastic tubes 2 with glass. I don't recall the brands, but all parts are replaceable and available at or local MFA coop. I think they might have been around $35 to $40 new.

Allflex makes a good pistol grip gun. We have some that are probably 20 years old and the only problem we've had is the o-rings are dryrotted. If you keep them lubricated with glycerine they should last about forever with prober cleaning and care.

Thanks for the reminder Sid. Ours are Allflex also. I knew I would remember if someone said it.

Well that's a pretty good recommendation for Allflex, isn't it? :) ;-)

One more question - sizes. When I look at the syringes they come in various sizes, 10ml, 60ml, etc and you can set them anywhere from .5 to 5ml depending on the syringe, it looks like. What size do you all use, and/or what size would you get if you were getting another one?

The ones we use all hold about 60cc. They work the best for us. Very seldom do we give anything a shot of less than 2cc. Most injections are at least 5cc or multiples of 5. I wouldn't see any need in getting something to go down to .5. Ours are adjustable by 1cc increments from 1-5.

Man I hate them things. They are big and clumsey.
I have trouble getting them into the right spot. Having busted my wrist and hand a couple times I also don't have much grip and have trouble squeezing the gun.
I guess I don't see much need to have to work cattle that fast that you can't reload a 12cc syringe. But I'm not working 100's of head either.
Hope it works for ya.

I have had both pictured by txag, and milkmaid. The blue allflex I have had no trouble with except to replace the O ring once. The metal one by Ideal, I believe, became inaccurate. The long plunger type thing has notches on the underside that catch on the handle grip to push out the meds. They either got worn down enough that it would slip, or the handle was wiggly so much that the first notch would miss. It's not terriably inaccurate, so I use it for big doses of LA-200, etc. But not for things like synchro shots where you are using 2cc, or 2.5cc's. I did spray paint the handle of the inaccurate one pink, and wrote on it with marker the same. There is a metal one made in Germany, like "Rauch" or something close, that two different vet clinics around here use. The rest all use Allflex. Allflex 25cc, and 50cc both run $45. The Ideal is almost half that.

I've got an old Ideal pistol grip similar to txag's that I've had for almost 30 years. It's stainless with a metal plunger/glass barrel. The only thing I've ever done is replace a barrel. But I've got one of the blue Allflex with a plastic barrel that I really prefer. Like Dee said, the only thing I've had to do to it is replace an o-ring. If I were buying a pistol grip, it would be the Allflex 50.

For an automatic, the Vetmatic is a really nice drawoff syringe for a good price. I've got one of those that is almost 20 years old. Only had to put one kit in it for four or five dollars. Accuracy is still perfect. It would probably be my choice for an automatic.
